Review: Nice feel, good size - Back in the 1980s I did some drum corps drumming, but haven't done much since. I decided, on a whim, to pick up a pair of sticks and a practice pad and see if I had any chops left, so I grabbed this Evans pad, and I'm glad I did. The size is nice, you can't put it in your pocket, but you can throw it in a backpack or other small bag. Having two sides is great. The light grey side is softer rubber so more bounce, the dark side feels more like the tight kevlar heads of my DCI days, so that's the only one I use. Bonus to that is that the soft rubber side grabs better to the surface it's on, keeping it in place better. That said, the dark side is considerably louder than the light, and someone doing any serious drumming on the black side is going to be heard throughout the house, or wherever, unless behind closed doors. The light side is actually very quiet. I've been drumming pretty heavily on it since I got it a few weeks ago, and it still looks like new, so the durability seems great. Happy with my Evans pad, now if I can just get my chops back.
Review: Well made - Nice. Holds up to my 12 year old percussionist.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you need to have a stand for this pad?**
A: You don't need a stand, but it's better if you have one. You could rest the practice pad on your lap or on a chair. Mounting it in a snare drum stand is the best way to use this practice pad, as it allows you to sit comfortably (properly), and adjust the height and angle of the practice pad...so I would highly recommend getting a snare drum stand with this practice pad.

**Q: We have a 7 year old just starting. Should we get the 12 inch or the 6 inch size? Related: Is one size better for "expanding" his practice set later?**
A: I played the 6 inch for years and just recently got the 12 inch. The 12 inch is much more convenient as it sits in your lap better, works well with a typical snare stand, and just offers more area to play on. The only benefit I can see with the 6 inch is that it's easier to travel with.

**Q: What is better? This or the Vic Firth 2-Sided Practice Pad also 12 inches. Pros? Cons? Final thoughts?**
A: The Firth pad is slightly better. It is a shame because RealFeel made the best pad in history (or at least, the best I've played) and changed it about 5 or 8 years ago. You can still find the older pads on ebay. Honestly, though, for a new pad, I'd recommend the Firth or a Vater pad over this one.

**Q: My son is a snare player in marching band. Will this give him the feel and sound he needs to practice?**
A: "Sound," no way does it sound like a snare. But most people aren't buying a practice pad because they want it to sound like a real drum. The point is to practice more quietly. But "feel," yes. The rebound is similar to a well tuned snare. I'm an older musician, but I'm new to drums, and I've developed a really nice buzz roll and other rudiments mostly through practicing on the pad. When I go to my real drum kit, the feel is similar. So it's effective to develop technique. Also, since it's portable, your son can slip it in his backpack with some sticks and practice anywhere. You probably want to get nylon tipped sticks - the rebound from the pad feels more natural.

Nice. Holds up to my 12 year old percussionist.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Surprising durability! Perfect for a first-time drummer.
*by M***P on February 14, 2026*

My daughter needed these for her drum class, and as someone who knows absolutely nothing about band or drums, I was a little worried about whether they would last. I’m happy to report they are surprisingly durable! They have held up great throughout her class despite all the practice. If you're a 'non-music parent' looking for a reliable pair for your child, these are a safe bet!
