Apt.51/Big Fat Movie Show presents APE
The DVD is not advertised correctly, this is not just "APE" in 3D. This is (from what I can tell) the third and final episode of a show called "Apt 51" but the title was changed for this episode to "Big Fat Movie Show"If you are into stuff like MST3k or RiffTrax, this might be a real treat! But if you are expecting just APE then you might be disappointed

Warning!! This movie interupted by sock puppets!!!1
This DVD should have a big red sign over it saying "WARNING!!! THIS MOVIE IS CONTINUALLY INTERRUPTED BY TWO ANNOYING SOCK PUPPETS!!"Two versions are contained on this disc. One in 2-D, with annoying sock puppets, and one in digital 3-D, with annoying sock puppets. There is nothing on the box mentioning anything about the puppets. So, anyone buying this will likely, as I did, assume that this is alegitimate release of the movie APE in its standard 2-D and original 3-Dforms. It doesn't even indicate what 3-D format it is. You have to seethe inside leaf to find out that you need to buy digital shutter glasses. They just took a 2-D print of the film, likely lifted from the previous DVD release from IMAGE.(Seek that version out if you don't want to see puppets.) Luckily for me, I own this set up and even have a processor for turning other recordings into this format. I had even turned my IMAGE APE DVD into 3-D with it. It has several depth settings.Does it work? That depends on what sort of 3-D you prefer. This process, called "Lazer 3-D" creates depth in the image. On a TV it gives you the feeling of looking into a deep box or tunnel. This is similar to recent so-called 3-D films like Nightmare Before Christmas and My Bloody Valentine. However, some foreground objects do seem to come out at you just a bit.Lazer 3-D did a great job turning the original Night of the Living Dead (a grainy public domain print)into a 3-D film. There was real depth to it and they even added some CGI objects and effects to the film that did indeed shoot out into the room with you. Blood that splatters on your glasses, etc. I recommend it. It's pretty cool. And I recommend buying one of these Lazer 3-D set ups. The 3-D version of APE that I created was way better than this DVD, and I didn't feel the need tocrack jokes with a sock on my hand. Mystery Science theater was funny at first, but the others that followed have worn out their welcome.I've tried watching MS3K in recent years and I find it to be a drag.It was funny when I was 22. Now I am 39 and it just doesn't hold up.

RED FLAG - RED FLAG - RED FLAG!
The fact that this is a DVD and not BluRay disc should be a huge red flag when it comes to the claim that is a 3D format. All should be aware that there is no such thing as 3D using DVD discs. All 3D systems in require BluRay discs. Well, at least not the standard 3D technology that everyone assumes will work with their 3DTVs. You will either have active shutter glasses or passive glasses with a 3DTV, depending on the system in order to display 3D, but both technologies ONLY work with BluRay discs and a BluRay, 3D-capable player. Both these 3D technologies only exist on BluRay, not the DVD disc format. There is an inferior type of 3D that is so low in quality (it destroys any semblance of natural color) that it was never considered usable for 3D Hollywood movie releases for the home. It called anaglyphic and it uses glasses with red and green filters. This DVD might possibly use that method, but if it does, you would be wasting your money. Secondly, the other reviewer here said that the movie has hand puppets interrupting the image -- that is a second huge red flag -- so it's a comedy actually mocking an existing bad movie. The fact that they repackaged it and made it seem like it's a movie in the giant ape genre only shows that it is totally deceptive marketing at its worst, trying to sell you something that it is not and then not telling you that it uses an inferior, discredited 3D method, not what your TV uses, and then not even mention it.You want a fantastic 3D big ape movie worthy of a 3D experience? Check out WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES 3D or KONG SKULL ISLAND 3D. Both have spectacular 3D sequences and they are go-to movies when you want to show off your 3D setup.
