No. You open oysters by inserting the tip of the knife where the actual hinge is.

How about resistance to stabbing the hand?

I guess it depends on personal strength. I'm female, and not really accustomed to opening oysters -- so, I made several mistakes...and still do. Just not that great with locating the "crease" in the shell to pry open the oysters. Without the gloves, I hurt my opposite hand several times. With the gloves, the knife still slipped but my hand was not injured.
