It's nice to have Richter's Eurodisc recordings together in one package, and while many people may already have some of the better known recordings (e.g. the WTC, which has been available for decades on RCA), it's worth having the rest especially at the current import price from some amazon resellers ($22 from Dodax). Most of the recordings were made in the early 1970's, so what you're hearing is Richter at his best. The last two cd's in the set, nos. 13 & 14, which combine Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff programs, come from sessions in 1983.The highlights, aside from the aforementioned famous Bach recordings, include the Schumann Symphonic Etudes, a fascinating performance that features some brutal Richterian eruptions that no one else could get away with; and all of the Rachmaninoff, which is uniformly spectacular. Although Richter's Beethoven could be a little too personal, the sonatas included here are excellent and don't suffer from an overdose of the pianist's occasionally hyperactive imagination. The Eroica Variations are musical and muscular, but tamer than Richter's 1968 recital reading (). The Tchaikovsky material is wonderful, although the sonics are hard and brittle despite being among the most recent of the Eurodisc recordings. On the other hand, while Richter was a wonderful Schubertian the sonatas here aren't representative of his best work. The D. 958 seems flat compared, for example, to Serkin; and because Richter observes the exposition repeat, the first movement of the D. 960 comes in at over 24 minutes - self indulgent by any measure (Sokolov, who also observes the repeat, comes in at just over 20 minutes).Five stars.

I'm in awe of these performances, and the quality of the remastered recordings. Excellent. The flawed discs described must be in the past because all I received played fine. Somehow I missed listening to Richter in the years of Horowitz, Rubinstein, Serkin, Ashkenazy. Although not qualified to judge, for me these are wonderful performances. Prior to buying this box set I purchased the Rachmaninov and Schumann CD's issued by Praga. The Rachmaninov is the same selections and the audio is also excellent, no better or worse than the box set. Praga doesn't report on recording dates in the notes but another reviewer states the Praga issue is from the original (prior to remaster) Eurodisc. The Schumann CD is of similar audio quality, not identical but some common pieces. A reviewer of the Praga CD states the Symphonic Etudes were recorded 1956. The Eurodisc recording is from September 1971, Salzburg. I suggest checking for common material before buying, something I failed to do because finding all the material is difficult on Amazon. In my view there is no reason to buy the Praga Rachmaninov CD (unless you don't want the other material in the Eurodisc box). There may be good reason to buy the Schumann CD. I'm not going to enter reviews for the Praga discs so hope people will see this. The other input I can offer is the Praga CD's are high quality. If there is music of interest not in this box, don't hesitate.

Un 'promenade' pianístico desde el monumental "Clave bien temperado" de Bach (en mi humilde opinión, esa versión integral en piano moderno como referencia) hasta los Preludios y Estudios de Rachmaninov pasando por Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms y exquisitas miniaturas de Tchaikovsky. Richter en estas grabaciones derrocha una técnica sobre el instrumento completa: contrastes, matices, pedales, ritmo y también, en el sentido metafísico: fe interior, bravura, luminosidad, energía, poderío, ternura, todo en el sitio exacto, cada cosa en el momento indicado, sin manierismos ni extravagancias, con un estilo y arte personales y a la vez impersonales, como si fuese el traductor 'ideal' entre el compositor (partitura) y el oyente. Richter nos habla bien claro a través de su gran cola, el sonido no es nitidísimo del todo pero la calidad de las grabaciones (al menos el cofre que me ha llegado) es muy alta, a pesar de estar grabado todo en analógico menos el Recital de Tchaikovsky que ya es digital. Lástima que no se haya 'rellenado' el vacío del tiempo de cada uno de los CD's con bonus o así, pero bueno, la sensación de tener un mini LP en todo color (un detalle de diseño que se aprecia mucho) y de escuchar estas grabaciones (las cuales no todas están disponibles en fuentes de Internet) es un placer para todos los sentidos. Totalmente recomendable, obras maestras del arte pianístico a través de uno de sus máximos intérpretes. Gracias a Richter por dejarnos ese testimonio definitivo.

Amazing remastering, sublime interpretation. For me the Chopin Scherzi disc stands as one of the greatest Chopin recordings ever! And the remastered edition from this box makes this gem even more glitter.

Es ist der perfekte Einstieg in die Kunst des "Jahrhundertpianisten" Sviatoslav Richter: Die vorliegenden 14 CD Box "Eurodisc Recordings" enthält Solo-Aufnahmen aus den frühen 1970er Jahren, entstanden in Österreich und Deutschland, dazu zwei Alben aus dem Jahr 1983 mit Werken von Tschaikowski und Rachmaninow (CD 13 & 14), die sich wunderbar in diese Box einfügen.Was diese Box vor den Konkurrenzprodukten von Sony (Columbia/RCA), Universal (Decca & DGG) auszeichnet, ist die Geschlossenheit, der gleichbleibend gute Klang der Aufnahmen und ein Pianist auf der Höhe seiner Meisterschaft. Wo anderswo amateurhafte Live-Aufnahmen von bisweilen eingeschränktem künstlerischem Wert mit viel Werbeaufwand angepriesen werden, erlebt man Richter hier unter vergleichsweise sehr guten Bedingungen.Das wirkt sich ganz offenbar auf das Spiel des Pianisten aus: Richter agiert mit innerer Ruhe und Übersicht. Spürt man in vielen Live Aufnahmen die Nervosität des Künstlers (die freilich auch manisch-hypnotisierende Darstellungen provozieren kann), hat er hier stets Kontrolle über das Geschehen. Das bedeutet natürlich nicht, dass damit Langeweile aufkommt, im Gegenteil! Die innere Ruhe erlaubt einige der schönsten und wertvollsten Richter-Zeugnisse überhaupt: Bachs Wohltemperiertes Klavier in Richters Eurodisc-Einspielung ist so ein Meilenstein (CD 1-4). Der spezifische, glockenhafte Klang des Flügels, mit einer guten Portion Raumatmosphäre und einem andächtig zelebrierenden Pianisten ist ein herrliches und einzigartiges Tondokument. Die Aufnahmen der späten Schubert-Sonaten (D 958 und D 960) sind von erlesener Schönheit und Tiefgründigkeit, die halten zurecht einen legendären Status.Auffällig auch, dass Richter sich bei seiner Zusammenarbeit mit den Eurodisc-Produzenten zu Einspielungen ganzer Zyklen hinreißen ließ. So verdanken wir Eurodisc nicht nur die Gesamtaufnahme des Wohltemperierten Klaviers, sondern auch die mitreißende Einspielungen der vier Chopin-Scherzi und - neben den Symphonischen Variationen - auch Schumanns Bunte Blätter op. 99. Nicht komplett, aber doch umfangreich sind die Auszüge aus den Préludes und Etüden von Rachmaninow. Auch Beethoven ist hier reichlich vertreten: Während die Klaviersonaten opp. 2/3, 7 (in einer sehr halligen Aufnahme) und 90 ja bereits in den unterschiedlichsten Versionen auf CD vorliegen, ist das Album mit den Beethoven-Variationen opp. 34, 76 und 35 ("Eroica") eine wertvolle Ergänzung der Richter-Diskografie.Die Box könnte man fast als repräsentativ für Richters Solo-Repertoire bezeichnen, wenn da nicht Werke von Skrjabin, Prokofiew und Schostakowitsch fehlen würden.>>> Die Wahl der Qual: Welche Box soll es denn nun sein?CD-Boxen mit Aufnahmen des großen Sviatoslav Richter sind gerade in den unterschiedlichsten Varianten erhältlich. Ein Sammler wird viel Geld investieren müssen, um wirklich alles zu besitzen. Erschwert wird dieses Unterfangen auch dadurch, dass große Konzerne wie Warner, Universal oder Sony mit den verschiedenen Labels unter ihren großen Dächern den Käufer mit einer Vielzahl von Box-Veröffentlichungen irritieren. Verwirrend ist auch die vorliegende Eurodisc-Box: Das Label war einst der E-Musik Ableger der Ariola und gehört heute zum Sony Konzern. Sony hat aber bereits "The complete album collection" veröffentlicht, beschränkt sich dabei aber auf die amerikanischen RCA- und Columbia Aufnahmen.Wer den Titel dieser Edition genau liest, wird aber bemerken, dass auch hier ein "The" vor "Eurodisc Recordings" fehlt. Man drückt sich hier bewusst schwammig aus, weil Eurodisc einst auch einige russische Richter-Aufnahmen für den westlichen Markt lizenziert hat. Wer auf die CD-Ausgaben der späten 1980er und frühen 1990er Jahre blickt, wird vollends verwirrt, weil hier die originären Eurodisc-Produktionen mit den russischen Lizenzaufnahmen vermischt werden. Immerhin hat diese Box durch das Ausklammern der teilweise stark rauschenden russischen Lizenzaufnahmen eine durchgängig relativ hohe Klangqualität.>>> FazitAuf den 14 CDs befinden sich ausschließlich gute Studioaufnahmen, bei denen der Pianist unter idealen Bedingungen spielen durfte und uns göttlich schöne Interpretationen schenkte. Und weil das spielerische und klangtechnische Niveau durchgängig hoch ist, empfiehlt sich diese Box gegenüber den in dieser Hinsicht recht unausgewogenen Richter-Boxen von Warner, Universal und Sony (Columbia & RCA-Aufnahmen).Mit dieser Edition kann man eigentlich nichts falsch machen – wenn man sie direkt bei Amazon bestellt! Denn so kann man vermeiden, dass man – wie ich – über Versandpartner die immer noch kursierenden Fehlpressungen (CDs 6, 8, 10, 12) geliefert bekommt, die man nicht einmal umtauschen kann, weil im Kleingedruckten auf die Fehlpressungen hingewiesen wird.
