Wondering if the shelves are sturdy enough to hold a cat? This would make a great cat tree.

I doubt it. It looked so flimsy I did not even put it together. I just sent it back. I would not trust it to my cat. I didn't even trust it to my plants and they don't jump.

The distance varies from shelf to shelf,,,,,,,,,,,,12 14 16 they are different from top- to bottom. Hope this helps
