What kind of wire connectors can I use?

The main power terminals screw down in the lug. The coil connection and additional power connectors are 1/4" Quick Connect (QC) terminals.

This contactor makes a high-pitched noise when energized - not very loud, but doesn't seem right. Is this normal?

I would get a voltmeter and make sure that the proper amount of electricity is passing through it sometimes coils will make a high pitch sound until they break and believe it or not but just check in with the meter before I would get everybody else involved good luck

which side is common and which side is hot for the 24v?

There is no common (white) wire for 220V wiring. Both are black. I used my 2-pole 240Amp 24 V coil contactor for my heat pump and 2 black wires come from the power source and go to the bottom two poles. In the future if you are simply replacing your new with an old contactor, its a good idea to always take a photo of the wiring before you disconnect the old one, so you can easily put all the wires back the same way.
