The real thing
This is the real thing.. It runs a lot with little winding and holds a charge. I bought 3 and keep one in by boat b/c it's waterproof. The light is bright, but it's not designed to throw a long tight beam. But for normal use, it's plenty bright... I studied a study on windup lights, and this one was the top choice. One of mine is solar powered. I leave it on the dash of my car to keep it charged by the sun. The light seems sturdy and shock-resistant. I've dropped it a few times on the boat deck, and it didn't hurt it... I got my step-daughter one for her upcoming long visit to Africa; it seems to be the perfect choice since batteries and charges might be an issue there. This thing doesn't need replacement batters or bulbs... I've had other wind-up flashlights before, and they were basically toys. This is a REAL flashlight, sturdy and highly functional..

They need to work on this product more! <<<<understatement
This was crap.At no point did the fire starter work at all.The instructions state that 60 seconds of cranking at 3 cranks per second would give you 10 minutes of flashlight time. It gave none at all.The compass was off, almost turned around backwards from where it should be.After plugging it in for 5 hours, as stated, to charge the internal battery, the flashlight came on, while still plugged in. As soon as i unplugged it, nothing worked. As a matter of fact the only thing on this that worked was the whistle, and it was no good either; not loud and the ball flew out and struck me in the face on the first whistle.

Does what it says... Slowly.
Well built. Very hard to catch anything on fire (I could not catch toilet paper on fire... And I tried for hours). Doesn't take much to get it charged. Can only charge phones while your winding, and you have to be winding at a very particular speed. I could not get my iPod to turn on from a bad battery after 20 minutes of winding. You can charge a portable charger and then use that to charge your device much easier. It does what it says... Just takes a lot of patience to catch anything on fire or charge a device.

GREAT FLASHLIGHT LOVE IT!!
LOVE IT! I ordered this to use as an emergency flashlight for the house in case I had no batteries for flashlights. I think now I will use this instead of purchasing batteries for my other flashlights. I of course did a test on the flashlight. I turn the crank handle for 90 to 120 seconds, used the low beam (which is bright) and after 8 hours the flashlight was still bright I turned it off. It definitely pass the test. I would absolutely recommend this.

More of a toy and a survival tool.
Will not charge an iPhone it says device not supported. Also, if you were to charge a device from this you need to crank it continuously. That is not realistic. The rescue whistle is not even close to being loud enough. The fire starter style/ design is a fragile one, you must be very careful never to allow anything to contact the element. The compass is a joke. Flash light is the best part and that is not anything to rave about. This is what you will get for $14, I would not count on this device in a survival situation

the 1001 model is superb
First rate product. Sturdy and all. And waterproof, what I was looking for.Ok, it does not illuminate like the picture, but that is like saying my car does not drive to 185 mph that the speedometer says.MUCH better than the others that u have to push down the hand to recharge them, these should be sold at the dollar store and the others are not anywhere near being waterproof.Yes, it is a bit big, but I like it, i feels good and sturdy in my hand. (The size is clear if u you look how it looks in a man's hand)Waterproofness to be tested.... but i did not buy them to go diving but just in case it fell i water, etc.

A nice hand crank flashlight that wanted to be more, but couldn't
The flashlight is very nice for the size, with only a few cranks you will get several minutes of light provided by two very bright LEDs. Not focused of course so it wont reach but will light up most of an average room and would fill a tent easily. The whistle is rather useless, the sound of you cranking the unit is in likelihood louder. As is the compass which only seems to work when it wants to...which doesn't make any sense as a magnet is a magnet and my hand is not generating varying fields. The fire starter will work but will require either a lot of patience or luck, the manual suggests that it can run for over ten seconds as it is designed to cut off after 10 seconds to save battery and allow you to use it again three seconds later. I was lucky to get 5 seconds of burn on a charge so if your kindling doesn't catch right away you have to start over cranking. Now the USB charging also works but to a much lesser degree, for some inexplicable reason it will only charge via cranks which means that the internal battery, as measly as it may be can't be used as a battery pack. You can only provide as much juice as you can crank at the time. I tested this on a Moto X Pure/Style which is a fairly power hungry device but not terribly so and cranking at a standard rate provides enough power to keep the phone from draining while powered on but nothing more. Speeding up the cranks(which they recommend against) gave me a max output of around 300mA(for context a typical wall USB charger is 1A or 1000mA current) so if you are willing to burn your motor out and sit there for a good amount of time cranking you can get a few minutes of use out your device...just turn it off to maximize the charge. Or as other reviewers have suggested it may be better to charge a second battery pack and then using that to charge your device. Also regarding the charging functionality instead of having a USB port on the unit they use a small barrel jack and give you a cable that converts it to a female USB, I strongly suspect that I will lose that cable in the future which will render the charging functionality useless without a replacement which I wont have on hand in an emergency. This DC jack also double as the input jack for charging the internal batter through another USB source. I would gladly have taken a slightly bulkier unit in order to have a USB port on the device itself instead of having to bring that cable long.Like I said I love the flashlight portion and that is enough to keep me from returning it, the fire starter will only ever be a last ditch resort however. I think I'm just going to tape the USB adapter to the device so that it does not get lost until it's needed.

Seller wanted me to send it back to confirm - I am not going to waste more time and $ with postage and packing
This machine and it's firestarter is a joke; it burnt out-smoked the very first time I tried it and never worked since. Seller wanted me to send it back to confirm - I am not going to waste more time and $ with postage and packing .Not dissing the seller but the product itself. Moreover the cost does not warrant the time to send it back.
