Exciting mix of pop rock and latin influences
The 16th release by Venezuelan born, singer/songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, released in 2016. The album was recorded at Baby Noel studio in Alicante, Spain, mixed in Mexico, produced and largely arranged by de Vita and engineered by Noel Pastor, a young (born 1978) Spanish singer, songwriter and producer and Grammy nominee. It features 9 original songs and five alternate versions, including a nice bachata version of “¿Dònde Está la Vida?” (Where is the life) and not one but TWO additional versions of the catchy, Bacilos sounding “Ya No te creo” (I no longer believe you). One is pure pop rock and another even more banda/rock version (backed by Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa de Monterrey) than the original, which has some less obvious banda influence. If you're not familiar with "banda" music, it's basically a northern Mexican marching band, with tubas and lots of other horns, punctuated on top with multiple clarinets, and generally at least one snare drum. It never has strings (guitars or violins) and no keyboards, although studio versions often add these elements.Other duets on the album include “No sé nada de tí” (I don’t know anything about you), with Lorenzo Fragola, 2014 winner of Italian X-Factor, and “Desde el Principio” (From the Beginning), with Spanish singer, songwriter and actress Rosario Flores, a two time Latin Grammy winner (born 1963,12 albums to date, first album released in 1992).The title track, to uptempo R&B groove, is dedicated to “those who have fought and continue to fight for freedom”, and is a passionateexpression of freedom of speech and association from someone whose homeland is now wracked by increasing violence and repression, and whose adopted homeland of Spain has a nasty history of denial of freedoms under the Fascist dictator Franco. The first single, “¿Dónde Está la Vida?”, is a fusion of classic rock with bluesy guitars and horns, whose title is but part of the full phrase cited in the song, “Where is the life...that we once had.”Libre is a nice mix of modern pop rock, slow-build ballads, and several very latin sounding tracks that is an overall fine outing from the not-old-yet (born in 1954) Latin/Spanish superstar.
