Since his first appearance in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes has been one of the most beloved fictional characters ever created. Now, in two paperback volumes, Bantam presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyle’s classic hero--a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmes’s adventures in crime! Volume I includes the early novel A Study in Scarlet , which introduced the eccentric genius of Sherlock Holmes to the world. This baffling murder mystery, with the cryptic word Rache written in blood, first brought Holmes together with Dr. John Watson. Next, The Sign of Four presents Holmes’s famous “seven percent solution” and the strange puzzle of Mary Morstan in the quintessential locked-room mystery. Also included are Holmes’s feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the chilling “ The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” the baffling riddle of “The Musgrave Ritual,” and the ingeniously plotted “The Five Orange Pips,” tales that bring to life a Victorian England of horse-drawn cabs, fogs, and the famous lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes earned his undisputed reputation as the greatest fictional detective of all time. Review: The best edition thus far released digitally - I'll refrain from reviewing the content of the stories here because, quite frankly, better people than me have done so in the past, both on an off desertcart. This review is in reference to the collected edition of these stories, specifically the one titled "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume I", as originally published by Bantam Classics in paperback format in 1986, and later released on the Kindle Store through Random House LLC. This edition features 4 novels and 56 short stories, with a forward by Loren Estleman. The cover of the current paperback (and the Kindle book) is an attractive black and white photograph of a gentleman walking away from camera (Sherlock Holmes, presumably). I go into such great detail describing this edition because there are a lot of cheap versions of the Sherlock Holmes collections floating around on the Kindle store. This is in large part due to the fact that the stories are now in the public domain, so just about anyone can release them at any price. You'll see collections drifting around in a price range from Free to $5.99 and up. The Bantam Classics edition is currently $4.99, and it's an absolute steal at the price. If you're going to purchase the stories, this is the book to get. The reason for this is simple: the Bantam Classic Kindle edition is not only properly indexed but properly formatted as well. This is a lot more than you can hope for with a number of the free versions you'll see on the Kindle store. I initially had an edition on my Kindle that claimed to be illustrated (it wasn't) and it also suffered from terrible formatting: misspellings, random numbers popping up in the middle of sentences, improperly formatted paragraphs, and little in the way of search-ability within the book. The Bantam Classics version is in much better shape, and is as far as I can tell identical to the paperback printing that can currently be purchased at bookstores (I own this paperback, but find it incredibly uncomfortable to hold at over 1,000 pages long, and so decided to double dip on the Kindle version). If you want to read the most well formatted digital version of Sherlock Holmes currently on the market, this is the one to have. Don't settle for the lesser clones floating around out there, pay a few bucks extra for quality. Review: Sherlock Holmes - Have always loved reading ,and watching Sherlock Holmes. Bought this Paperback to take on the Road with me. Fast Shipping.

Highly recommend!!
This is a really fantastic collection. The book is small and easy to carry around, but the text is still plenty readable. It's such an affordable paperback as well. Sherlock Holmes is iconic, and it's an absolute delight to read about his adventures with Watson!

I like a good mystery and I especially love the Victorian ...
I never read Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I read history, political science or economics. But when I read fiction, I like a good mystery and I especially love the Victorian era. In fact, I never even watched the old black and whites with Basil Rathbone that my brother was always glued to. I had NO idea what I was missing. Not being a short story person per se, I've found myself engrossed in every one of the these. Mr. Doyle was a very creative, imaginative and prolific writer and while he's not the only one, I personally believe him to be the best when it comes to the short ones which I usually find boringly unimaginative and rarely read. Not so here. I absolutely Love this book and found myself as engrossed in reading them as my brother did in watching them. I don't have a favorite because I like them all and can see why some people have read them again. They are that good! The book is well organized with every story indexed. Amazon came up with a new font designed especially for the Kindle while I was reading this. I forget what it was called, but I downloaded it to try and it really does seem to make reading easier. I've three stories left in this book and then I'm off to purchase Volume II.

Watson! do you have your service revolver?
I first read Sherlock Holmes when I was six years old, and if you read him every ten years they are as good as new. (I'm now 64). Stern and arrogant, but fair he was: though concerning the Giant Rat of Sumatra he may have been a little reticent. The typeface is a bit too faint, but these novels and short stories excel in the Bantam editions because they are in chronological order. This makes it easier to understand "His Last Bow" for example. I purchased both volumes at the same time so this review serves for both. Conan Doyle gets all the credit! Try all the rest of his books.

Shocking format
This was obviously translated from another language because whoever translated it, did an absolute shoddy job, every other word is in another language and it just ruins the reading experience. Disgraceful.

Grandissimo libro

Loved the book
I'm a fan of detective stories and was therefore extremely happy to find this collection of short stories about Sherlock Holmes. The writing is so good that you can paint a mental picture of Sherlock and from time to time get annoyed with his arrogance and the admiration of Watson. The mysteries are also not for the reader to be solved. One is merely invited to witness the conclusions of Sherlock's great minds. Although with some stories my guesses were pretty close to the truth. However, I'd recommend it to everyone who enjoys detective stories.
