This pool fence is truly DIY and installs rather quickly. We installed two gates and about 300 feet of fencing in about 5 hours total work time. Buy, borrow, rent, or steal a large hammer drill like a Bostitch Bulldog with a high-quality bit $35-$40, that made all the difference. I followed the instructions related to using the prescribed drill template tool especially with angled the corners and man it is tight and looks great. This product comes ready to install and has all the parts and instructions. High-quality materials used and it all appears to be durable for long life. One rule I saw on a video that is a good rule of thumb; don't drill all your holes first, just do two to three at a time and check your tightness. I fudged the cardboard hole guide template about an 1/8 in. to the tight side. It makes it a little harder to push in but I liked the fence really tight looking. That was my method. The most important thing is my 1 and a half-year-old is safe and it makes my pool area look clean and a lot bigger!

I love the way my pool fence came out. Everything fit into place perfectly and the fence is sturdy and taut. My child will not be able to get through. I have seen some negative reviews about the fence sturdiness or the drill guide being ineffective, but I can only assume these folks didn’t properly follow instructions. The drill guide is an absolute must have for this install. Don’t try to make your own or go freehand. You need to be able to drill holes with the proper light or heavy lean in order for the fence posts to come out correctly. Follow the instructions provided, they are well written and vital. People complained about the drill guide wing nuts coming loose during use, but you can tighten the wing nuts with an Allen wrench, and I had no problems with them coming loose. I had to drill 46 holes and it lasted. You won’t be able to use the guide for much else afterward, but you need it for this job imo. Get a high powered hammer drill (with extra batteries if going cordless) and good quality drill bits. You’ll need multiple bits if drilling lots of holes (maybe a new bit every 10 holes) into concrete/rebar. I drilled through flagstone/concrete/rebar. Dribble water onto the hole as you’re drilling to avoid stone from splitting. I also chose to skip the gate as you can just open one of the panels and stick it into a layback hole for when the pool is in use, so I can’t speak to the gate quality or ease of installation. I’m happy with no gate though. Overall, if you can follow instructions and have the strength to drill the holes, then you can do this job and I would recommend this pool fence and drill guide.

Wowza! Truly you need to be a great Diyer to get this done. It was not easy. I will say, if everything was exact to size, it’s doable. If you need to adjust the size of a fence, phew! That was a bit frustrating. All in all, it worked and we are happy with it. But cutting it down and reforming one of the fence sections was hard. You really need to do this exact to insure safety. As mentioned in some of the other comments, even if you are handy, be sure to read instructions for this one! I mark 4 stars as it still being a good product.

About Me: I’m a mechanically inclined engineer with a solid background in building houses from the ground up. Bottom Line: This is a very well engineered system that can handle even complex fence topologies. With the right attention to detail, I think this system would be well-suited for just about any install. There are minor foibles but they are overcomeable. One person can do this install all by themself but with a drilling buddy you’ll go way faster. Foibles: 1) The 4’ tall auto-closing gate comes with two vertical pieces that are what’s tied into the concrete deck with the gate itself that connects between them. The vertical pieces have two parallel posts that go into the concrete deck. It is not mentioned in the instructions, but it is CRITICAL that you get these two holes to be as parallel as possible. Pay very close attention as you are drilling these. 2) The 4’ tall auto-closing gate comes disassembled, with the two vertical pieces, the gate itself, the two spring-loaded hinges, and the magnetic locking mechanism. It is on you to assemble this. Two issues: 1) It is a huge PITA to unload these hinges as you drill/secure them onto the vertical pieces and the gate. Having a second pair of hands for this part is a huge help. 2) The holes in the hinges DO NOT line up well with the pre-drilled holes on the gate, due to the thickness of the gate webbing itself. Expect to have to tweak the holes yourself once you see how each hinge lines up. 3) I would HIGHLY encourage you to 1) Create a plan for how you’re going to do your drills 2) Reach out to the manufacturer with your plan and talk through your plan 3) Even if you’re doing something that’s a gentle curve 4) especially if you have any 90 degree turns. 4) The drilling guide tool is a pretty good tool but I did have some slippage on one of my final drills that made an even drill into a light lean drill because I hadn’t checked the tightness of the tool prior to that drill. Check the tightness of the tool after every couple of drills! General: 1) The manufacturer is SUPER helpful & responsive - use them!. I called them several times to talk through my complex fence topology (which included two gates, 5 90 degree turns, and tie-ins to existing split-rail fencing). They also had answers to what I considered to be random questions (how deep does a custom-poured concrete pier need to be? 8-10” deep). 2) I did my drills one drill at a time and then measured the next drill hole location from the exact resultant center of my previous drill. I think the instructions are unclear on whether to do this or to just plot out all of your drills initially. Seemed to me that over long spans, small errors in location would stack up. I’d highly recommend doing that, I didn’t have to go back and rework any drills due to this source of error. 3) One major advantage of this system, that I learned when I decided to use more of this fencing instead of traditional split-rail fencing at a certain point in my topology, is that you can re-drill a hole that you’ve done to the wrong direction of lean. Just fill your hole with cement, let it cure, and re-drill in that same spot. Worked like a charm. 4) I can confirm that having a rotary hammer drill is a necessity for this installation.

This pool fence is awesome and installs quite quickly easily with some planning, following the directions, and using the right tools. I installed 45 feet of this in about 2.5 hours. I did a ton of research and read lots of reviews. As far as their drill guide goes...the general concensus from many reviews is it's overpriced garbage you'll never use again and it may not even give you good results so I decided to make my own for about $10. I purchased at Lowe's a 1/2" x 4.5" iron pipe threaded nipple and a 1/2" iron pipe floor flange. Thread the 2 pieces together and screw down in the center of a piece of wood. I used a scrap piece of some 1" by ? lumber I had laying around that I cut down to approx 4" x 13". I drilled a 3/4" hole of out the center of the wood first. The necessary 5/8 masonry bit fit nice and snug inside the pipe...so much so that the head of the drill bit will not fit through. You must slide the drill bit up through the bottom of the guide before attaching the bit to the drill. I used a Bauer rotary hammer drill I got at Harbor Freight and a Bosch 5/8" x 12" (yes 12" is plenty long enough with my homemade drill guide) SDS Plus masonry bit I picked up at Home Depot and it worked great. As far as the whole light lean, heavy lean issue goes, I simply used a wood shim between my patio and the bottom of the guide. Slide it closer to the drill bit...heavy lean; further away from the bit...light lean. Line up the tip of the bit with the mark you made for the hole, step on each side of the piece of wood to hold the guide in place and drill til you bottom out the drill on the top of the guide. Piece of cake. Hope my review helps you decide to get this fence and save some serious money and get great results by building your own guide like I did.

Fence seems to be good quality. I would buy again. If drilling through concrete, get the right drill. A regular hammer drill will not work. You need a SDS hammer drill.

**UPDATE** I contacted Pool Fence DIY directly and they sent me a new section of fence for free to replace the gate. Until my daughter is old enough to behave, I will be cutting a fence section to fit the gate slot and will reinstall the gate in a few years. This review should have gone on the gate segment product page, but if you are buying the gate, you are also buying this fence, so I will let it stand. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought this fence in 2019 when my wife and I bought a house with a pool. We weren't looking for a pool, but we decided the house was worth the hassle of the pool. I did some research and found this fence consistently well reviewed and decided to buy it. I installed it in October of 19 and haven't had any issues until today (as others have mentioned, buy the drill guide and borrow a rotary hammer from someone, makes this waaaaaaay easier). That said, my two-year-old defeated this fence. My son is 4 and my daughter is 27 months. My son knows not to go in the pool and hasn't ever tried to defeat the fence (to my knowledge). My kids and I were in the backyard, but I was about 100 feet away picking up some toys when I looked over and saw her with a pool skimmer trying to clean the pool. I sprinted over, unlocked the gate, and got her out. I asked her how she got in and she said "I CLIMB DADDY!!!" So yeah, I am not pleased with this. Up until now, the fence has apparently been giving me a false sense of security. After some experimentation, I got to watch how she did it. She grabbed the post for the gate segment of the fence and scaled it like she was climbing a gutter downspout in a James Bond flick. Yes, my my daughter is pretty agile, and might even be part monkey, but this is a pretty serious flaw. If you have kids that are adventurous, this fence WILL NOT keep them out of the pool. I am not sure what to do now.

Looks great! Setup wasn’t terrible. Installed in wooden deck, mostly into the joists, a few into blocks I screwed in. I did not buy the drill guide because of the price, but it would have made install easier and more precise. I just guessed at what angle to drill the corners at, which worked out but would be better and easier with the guide. Overall very happy with the product.

This fence was really easy to install. Marking and drilling the post holes was the most difficult part. Mark and measure with the template provided then actually take a fence section and line up your marks to avoid drilling holes in the wrong position. Used a rotary hammer drill and shop vac to keep the mess down. You definitely need the heavy duty drill and a concrete bit to get this job done quickly and keep it looking professional. A regular drill would not be able to complete this project. We did not order the hole guide and were able to estimate any angles needed. We needed to cut and resize 3 of the 4 corners and it was fairly simple. Strength- wise our toddler has run full steam into it a few times and it hasn't moved. We ordered and installed the gate. It never lined up enough to be self closing/ latching but closes with a little effort from us. One person can completely remove the fence in under 20 minutes. Overall very satisfied with this purchase.

While we experienced a two week delay in delivery we were happy to receive the fence. We have an above ground pool with a 8 foot opening. The instructions were very clear and the installation, on a wooden deck, were quite simple. I had to cut the fence since it was too long but that too was easy to do. Hopefully this greatly improves pool safety for all.

I was looking for a removable fence and that product is just perfect. I did’nt have a complex shape and took me 1 hour to install including adding some wood blocks under my deck. Very nice look and you can see the other side as if there was nothing. I highly recommend this product
