Perfect for my little hero
This story is adorable and the art takes me back. I have loved Mercer Mayer books since I was a kid myself. So happy to share that with my son who gets his love of fantasy from his Dungeon Master daddy. If your child loves fantasy, or you want them to, you will not regret adding this gem to your collection.

LOVE IT
This is yet another beautiful, highly detailed and humorous book by Mercer Mayer. Every page is full of humor. SPOILER ALERT (kind of... and a response to other people's criticism): The ending is supposed to be humorous which if you understand Mercer Mayer you would understand as well. It is in his nature (my opinion) to tell things like they are with their good and bad sides but always in a humorous way. This is what made me like his books from the first Little Critter book he wrote. Things were not perfect, kids were messy, life was not polished and even walls were cracked :D Anyway, the whole book shows the imagination of a little boy and a boy won't always imagine the perfect ending. In this case, the boy got afraid from what he imagined, perfectly normal in real life. :) Loved the charming pictures as always. Mercer Mayer's talent is immense.

great book
Bought THE BRAVEST KNIGHT for 5 yr old grandson's birthday, along with a knight costume. He and his little sister really enjoyed the book.

Didn't like the ending
Love Mercer Mayer. His little critter books are popular with my son. This book is pretty good, has nice art and good amount of story. But, I personally didn't like how at the end the kid "lost" against the giant in his Knight fantasy.

A book for pre-schoolers in which the hero is flippantly killed.
The Bravest Knight really could have been a classic book, except it has one of the worst endings I have ever read in a book for little kids. The illustrations are charming, and the book does a good job of capturing the romantic spirit of what a child might imagine being a knight was like. SPOILER ALERT: Then, in the last two pages, the knight who the little boy was imagining himself a squire to, goes into a cave, and the troll emerges victorious, the implication being the knight is dead, and the daydreaming narrator decides he's glad he wasn't born a thousand years ago. OK, first off, I don't know what the author was thinking here. Trying to say we should not romanticize the past? That sometimes evil wins? I'm not in any hurry to teach my 4 year old son that sometimes the good guy loses, but if that's really the point you want to make, then don't do it in such a flippant and callous way. My son was crestfallen when we came to the end of the book, and we both immediately decided to re-write it together, where the knight won the battle, and the boy still wanted to be born in that age. A shame really. The author ruined an otherwise great book with an ending that's too clever by half and sure to disturb little kids. I'm actually very surprised there aren't any other negative reviews based on the ending.

Superb book!
Mercer Mayer never fails to produce 1st rate children's literature. I first became familiar with this book when it was published under the title Terrible Troll. The boy dreams of a life in another time, but comes to see that his present life is the place he wants to be. Illustrations include his cat in each situation. The story has limited vocabulary, making it a must have for early readers.

Best children's book ever!
When I was a beginning reader this was my very favorite book. The twist ending was fun, but what I found completely enthralling was the illustrations. My imagination soared while studying the pictures and I always had to go find a pencil and paper to draw my own. Highly recommended. My own kids are now likewise swept up in this story. The version I remember from my youth was "The Terrible Troll" which I think had a couple pages at the end that demonstrated how to make your own sword and shield, which I also enjoyed.

Mercer Mayer books are great
The bravest knight tells a story about a little boy who dreams of living in a time with dragons, trolls, and bad knights. Mercer Mayer's drawings are always great for kids - my son (3) and daughter (4) both love his books and often choose them both to be read, but also for themselves to flip through and (presumably) create their own stories in their heads.I also HIGHLY recommend his other books like "One Monster After Another" and "Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-Zoo"
