The return of the pulps continues with good results
Matt Cruse is back in a big way and with Starclimber Oppel transfers his boy adventure/action adventure pulp series firmly into the world of golden age Science Fiction as Cruse and his fellow Canadians (Yes that's right Canadians) become the first men and Women in space. This series is just good fun all the way through and should be pleasing to both adults and children, it is certainly worth the $5.99 price tag and I hope everyone gives it a try. I noticed a few other reviewers bring up the switch to science fiction as well and I feel it necessary to point out that for those interested in only modern "hard science" in their SciFi this story will no doubt seem trite and silly. But as I stated in my earlier review of "Skybreaker" it's my contention that this series is an attempt by Oppel to write his own version of golden age pulps so don't be surprised if some of the things that happen in this book defy the laws of physics as we now know them. Still I hope everyone gives this series a try as I had a tone of fun reading it.

Satisfying conclusion to drama-filled trilogy
Read all three books in this trilogy because my daughter wanted to (she's 11, and a strong reader for her age). Suitable for young readers, the YA romance element never goes farther than longing, and a few kisses. Solid storytelling in a steampunk-ish world, though I'd prefer Oppel reduce the use of "it was" and "said." He's also got a tendency to mix speakers in the same paragraph, which drives me batty. However, most readers probably won't notice those pedantic gripes amid colorful characters—not the least of which are pirates—airship wrecks, and strange new creatures. Loved the story, but wished the writing style were stronger.

Great "Boys/Girls Adventure" Updated for Today + Steampunk!
This is the third book in Oppel's Matt Cruse-Kate De Vries series. It is definitely in the category of "Boys/Girls Adventure" book, but certainly updated for young teenagers today. My son, age 12, has read all three books in the trilogy and loved each and everyone of them...even with the more sophisticated relationship between the protagonists in this current novel. I have also read all three and think this last one is actually the most sophisticated and developed. The series takes place in an alternative early 1900s where France and Canada are the dominant nations and the technology is steam-ish punk. The first novel is about air pirates, the second about high altitude salvage (and more pirates) and this third about the race into space. The plot is well-developed, the characters believable and the pacing is fast, but with lots of lovely little details.

Starclimber was a good addition to the series
Starclimber is the third book in this series. Matt and Kate are back. This time they journey into space.Kate has joined the suffragettes and of course gets both herself and Matt into trouble. It is good to have a reminder that women's rights were fought for and are more recent than some young people realize. There is also an uncomfortable view of the class structures that existed in times past. The story has action and adventure just like the other two, the only thing missing were the pirates, but they had anarchists in their place this time. This series has a modern day Jules Vern feel to it. If you enjoyed Harry Potter or Percy Jackson you will like it.There was humor and some nice tension between Kate and Matt, I would recommend the story to anyone who enjoys a good adventure.

Oppel may be the Jules Verne of the 21st century
Matt Cruse and Kate DeVries join the crew of the Starclimber on man's first mission into space. Ascending a cable to its zenith in orbit around the earth, they must contend with their own stormy relationship in the midst of a steady stream of life-threatening crises.Author Kenneth Oppel's alternate version of the 1800's continues to provide fertile ground for his imagination. As in the preceding installments of this trilogy, he presents compelling characters, a rousing adventure, and populates the heavens with more intriguing life forms. Each book in the series has taken our heroes even higher than the previous installment, so I suppose we won't be seeing any more of Matt and Kate unless the author is plotting how they might reach the moon via steampunk technology. If so, I'll be there.

Surprisingly disappointing!
I almost feel there isn't much point in reviewing this- if you are like me, you loved the first 2 that you will buy this without checking the reviews. I certainly wouldn't have at the time. Unfortunately, the third installment in this series has greatly disappointed me. Since the last book, there has been a space race of sorts, and now our protagonist is employed along with half the country presumably on a massive tower that will reach into space. Later on, he gets called to become a part of a competing space program, this one utilizing an elevator that reaches tens of thousands (!) of miles into space that has somehow been constructed without anyone else noticing. So Matt, his love interest, and several other recurring characters get to visit space, and along the way they encounter space barnacles, religious extremism, and a depressingly weak "whodunnit".The plot wobbles between boring and laughably dumb, the relationships between the characters go through the exact same stages as the previous books, and the status quo is inevitably restored, science or common sense be damned.Perhaps the next installment will be bette, who knows.

Amazing!
I read the three books in this series all within a week, this one being the last one. Oppel's writing is absolutely phenomenal. He keeps the reader wondering, never knowing what's going to happen next and how Matt Cruse will react to the situations that arise. It's classified as a young adult novel, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed every page. You're never too old or too young to spark your imagination with a great book.

My 12 year old son does not like to read for pleasure but he has to for school so I was pleasantly surprised by this series of books - he’s actually enjoying them!

Book was heavily damaged upon arrival
Very disappointed in how this book arrived today. Damage (scrapes and dent) to the front of the book, and damage (folding) to the pages inside. Hopefully it can be replaced...
