Review: Plastic + Steel + Industrial Velcro = No Pesky Birds! - We had been having a really bad time trying to discouage birds from nesting around our house. From doves, to pigeons, to robins, and finches ... they ALL were really persistent! (and messy!) We're fine with them nesting in our trees and bushes, but do not like having to clean up the porch and patio areas. The stainless steel spikes (when used alone) worked well enough to keep the larger doves away, but the robins actually sat in between the tynes! At one point, I momentarily considered getting a "pet" Falcon! (Not really, but you get the idea.) desertcart to the rescue! I purchased the Bird-x Bird Spikes, both in the PLASTIC version (it has bendable tynes) and the STAINLESS STEEL version (for strength), so that the two could be "nested" (pardon the pun) in such a way as to create a nicy, sturdy, "pin-cushion" effect. Both versions can be bended and snapped to desired length. I found that simply bending one of the steel tynes over the plastic strip was quite sufficient to hold it all together. This way, ALL sizes of birds would be discouraged. One goal was that the spikes stay securely in place, the other goal was that they COULD be taken down if desired (say, to sell the house). Not wanting to affix the plastic-steel spike combos with nails, glue, or caulk, I hit on a FANTASTIC IDEA: INDUSTRIAL VELCRO! I found it at a local craft store, where it listed being good to secure planting boxes onto porch rails, indoors or out. I cut the Industrial Velcro into small pieces, and left them fastened together. Positioning the velcro with the thicker side against the spike-unit, a simple bit of pressure allowed the whole thing to be safely, and securely affixed to the top of the pillars, and beneath of couple of roof gables, too. This way, if I ever chose to take them down, then later put them back up, I wouldn't have too much of a challenge remembering what went where. As long as the velcros were all facing the same way, all I would have to focus on would be the length of the strips. I did this all around the house in just about an hour. (This included positioning the ladder, climbing up and down, and so forth). BTW, I am a 60-year old gal and not particularly good with tools, but THIS was easy AND it didn't damage my manicure! I have 6' tall wood fence that it uses to leap on top of my laundry room roof.** A: I don't have any experience with raccoons. I have used this kind of bird spikes in my former house to prevent stray cats and squirrels from walking along my wooden fence in the backyard and it did not work. The cats simply walked very carefully and slowly and put their paws in between the spikes, but if they were alarmed they could still run all over and around the spikes. The squirrels simply took a detour and hopped onto the tree branches to get to where they wanted to go! **Q: how many feet?** A: Roughly 8-10 I'd say. Unfortunately, I've had these long enough that some of them have gotten damaged and been thrown away. So if I remember correctly the total of all pieces added up to about 10 feet. **Q: Do i have to put spikes into each hole?** A: Hello, the spikes come fully built so I'm not sure which holes you are referring to. I noticed a 10-foot area of wall at the rear of my yard, which many cats were using to cut across my property, so I installed the steel spikes there. NOTE: a few spikes were loose or became loose upon installation, but Bird-X is sending me some extra supplies (the loose spikes are the reason for a 4-star rating instead of 5). Still, the product was easy to install with Liquid Nails and seems to have done the job. I haven't seen any more cats in my backyard! At the same time, I installed the Bird-X 3D coyote decoy in the middle of the yard--and this thing has all but eliminated not only cats, but also the squirrels and birds that were making my yard their daily playground! Just to be thorough, I put a sticky foot gel (bird repellent) all atop the walls around the rest of my property (cats like to be clean, and this stuff is really hard to clean off without opposable thumbs and running water!). The yard is now peaceful, and I don't have to worry about my son catching taxoplasmosis or some other nasty catborne disease. I may buy one more coyote--the one is looking a little lonely at the moment!
