Q: What are the inside (actual bed size) dimensions and is the pillow part really hard?

The inside dimensions (the cushion itself) are 16" x 22". The factory pillow is not hard, it is just very full and rounded. My shih Tzu weighs 15lb and it could accommodate a larger dog. She has plenty of room on it.

Q: What is the actual size. From arm rest to arm rest?

Overall length is 34" but the seating area is 22". My baby loves his sofa he would sleep in it all day, if I would let him.

Q: My shihtzu is about 12 lbs, would the small bed be big enough for him?

Didn't realize there were different sizes. The bed I purchased is 20x32 (outside dimensions) and your shihtzu would definitely be comfortable in that size bed

Q: Has anyone tried this bed for a cat?

I have not. I bought it for my dog. I had to remove the pillow that came with it because it was very stiff and very high. It was easy to do because it has a zipper. I replaced it with a feather pillow and my dog loves it. I can picture a cat liking this, if s/he doesn't have a cardboard box. (lol)
