Super helpful. I can’t recommend this book enough. Especially for academic linguists, you will find this book’s method extremely intuitive and practical.My only complaint is that it’s a book ONLY for teaching basic characters and stroke order to beginners. NOT for vocab. So the pronunciation of the characters isn’t given until the very end of the chapters. But that’s a small gripe compared to how useful this book is with regards to what it is actually trying to do.I don’t know how well it would work in a real classroom setting, but I highly recommend for those doing independent beginner study. A lot of textbooks and grammar books are basically interchangeable, but this book is totally unique and indispensable.

Excellent Guide
The HSK now includes writing and is timed. If you're looking for an excellent resource for reading and writing Mandarin this is it. Easy to read with interesting examples and memory tricks. The text I wish I had from the beginning.

It was rated in good condition, but it was in excellent
The book arrived quickly. It was rated in good condition, but it was in excellent, nearly unused, condition. Aside from a slight bend in the back cover, the book appeared to be new. This was a very good buy. It was a practially new book for a reasonable price that arrived quickly.

History adds to character learning
This book provides historical, cultural and meaning-based context for learning simplified characters. It gives a good introduction to a variety of radicals and a large number of characters. The approach would suit learners with an academic disposition. The book suggests it be used as a stand-alone course for learning characters without learning their pronunciation. No doubt this would suit some learners but I would personally find it very hard to learn that way. Instead I am using it to reinforce and expand a course where character and pronunciation are taught simultaneously. In this context I find it very good, even exciting in the extra dimension it offers.
