It works jyst like a calendar. Start with 1 and each day go in numerical order until Dec. 24.

How do you get the game instructions for the 2021 calendar? They don't se to come with it

There is a QR code and a website listed on the box

While this is an advent calendar, a new feature of the 2021 edition is that it does also become a simple board game. The board game is built into the display area of the advent calendar. The various little Lego builds provided by calendar decorate the game's pathway that tells the story of Harry's first journey to Hogwarts. And one of the daily items from the calendar is a dice-like device to determine the steps forward you move along this path per each turn.

Are there supposed to be extra pieces when building the set?

Yes, I usually find extra pieces when I build any Lego set. The Advent Calendars are no exception. I think they are there in case you lose a piece.
