It gives you options on how sensitive you want the device to be. You do have a choice between a simple chime sound and the actual alarm. It does take 3 AAA batteries. I looked for instruction on how to open it up to the battery compartment and nothing, anywhere, not even in the videos by the company or by those customers. There is three tiny screws on the side where the battery compartment is, and it is the lower screw that keeps the battery compartment secure. You have to remove it. You will need a tiny screwdriver like the ones used for glasses or computers. It is so tiny that you might lose it if you are not careful. Once removed, slide the door to the batteries down and then lift up. After turning on the device, you have a little time to hang the alarm on the inside of the door. Countdown starts when you hear one loud beep and then you will see flashing red light until it is armed.
