Huberd's Shoe Grease – Leather Conditioner & Waterproofer Since 1921

This shoe grease worked in very well with my new pair of leather hiking boots. It does turn the leather a dark color. It appears to be waterproof and it softens the leather to wear a break-in of the new boots was minimal.

I’m one of the guys who buys good work/casual leather boots that I routinely clean, polish and take care of. The older they get the better they fit and look pretty cool. Unfortunately after a lot of polish over time the wax builds up and looks bad. So I’m getting away from polish and I’m going to make Huberd’s Shoe Grease my go to. I started by cleaning the hell out of the boots. I used warm Dawn Dish Soap and a round bristle brush that is typically used on dishes. This is by far the hardest part of the process. You really have to scrub hard and it takes quite a while to get EVERYTHING off of the leather. Once the leather is stripped down to its original grain you have to let them dry. Trust me, you will get a great looking finish if you’re patient and let the leather dry entirely. Once it’s dry it looks very light in color (brown) and actually looks very dry and new. Now use the grease. This stuff is awesome. Apply the grease with your finger in spiral motions over the entire boot. The grease initially starts off hard in texture. But once you start working it on the boot it starts to get oily and easy to spread. When done the leather looks richer and softer. Now dry again. Remember, let it dry entirely. When this stuff finally dries out and has soaked in the leather color is like new, is much softer and is hydrated. The great thing about this grease is that it has no chemicals mixed in. You can apply to the stitching and especially the stitching that holds the leather to the heavy sole. It lubricates the stitching and makes it more flexible and strong. Most good boots die early because the stitching has gotten dry or rotted and begin to brake away from the sole. So you toss them and go buy another pair of$150/200.00 boots that you need to go through another brake in period. The final step is to apply a second coat. It won’t take much grease this time due to the first coat totally saturating the leather. The second coat dries with a nice subtle shine after it has dried. If you do this right it will take 2 days to complete because of the drying time. It’s a labor of love for some of US. I’ve had my brown Red Wings Iron Ranger boots for 18 years. You go buy a pair of these boots today and they run you $320.00. If you’re willing to pay that kind of money then you’re willing to take care of them. So in conclusion, I give Huberd’s shoe grease 5 stars in every category. The stuff is priced good and works better than advertised. They’ve been around since 1929 and is still made in the USA. That means a lot to some of us. I apologize for my lengthy review but I believe this stuff is worth my time and I think any guy like me will appreciate another opinion. Now ask me about my 40 yr old FILSON flannel field coat! You get what you pay for sometimes Fella’s. Best of luck to you all.

HUBERDS SHOE GREASE is hands down the best waterproofing/leather conditioner out there! Beige used numerous brands over the years and this is the winner! The SMELL IS AMAZING!! Just like a CANPFIRE!! If that’s not your thing don’t worry it dissipates quickly ( about 2 days), but what man dosent like the smell of a nice CAMFIRE!! It will NOT deteriorate the stitching like mink oil does. ONE THING TO NOTE, if using on any leather other than black IT WILL DARKEN THE LEATHER!! Not a bad thing makes it look great especially when the leather is aged and shows patina. If you know about Dr Marten boots you know they are not water proof. After using 3 coats of Huberds on all my Docs and heavy on the stitching especially the Goodyear Welt the water just be beads off and no more soggy feet! Soak the can in hot water to to get thin and shake well as ingredients can separate. I wiped down the leather, heated boot with a hair dryer and applied a nice coat with a micro fiber cloth. Heated again with blow dryer and the leather just drank it up, especially my GRIZZLY Leathe and SOFTER Leather Docs!! I did two more coats/heating and left over them over night. Gave them a wipe with fresh microfiber cloth and used a horse hair brush and perfection! I HIGHLY recommended HUBERDS SHOE GREASE FOR ANY OF YOUR LEATHER!!!

Pretty happy with this purchase. It's a good, heavy-duty grease that really sinks into the leather to soften and protect it. Nothing crazy fancy about it, it's just a solid, old-school product that handles the job perfectly.

I am a huge fan of taking care of my boots. I just bought this to compare to the Obenauf's, and Redwings' NaturSeal (which I've learned is just Aquaseal relabeled) that I already own. Obenaufs has a natural honey smell to it, the Naturseal has a like a sweet leather smell to it, and the Huberd's shoe grease is like a smoked bacon and pine smell mixed. To be honest I like the smell of the Huberds the best. When you spread the Huberds on the boot it definitely gets more of a liquid consistency than the NaturSeal and Obenaufs and seems to rub in quicker when you use your fingers. Its winter here now and the snow just beads on the boot when it melts and doesn't absorb into the leather. Ive had the shoe grease on my boots now for a week now (11/26/14) and my boots are still beading water off of them. If your in the market for a leather boot care/shoe care product this is definitely at least worth a try. Like I said I'm going to keep using this because it is just as good as all the other leather care products in its class and the tipping point for me was I love the way it smells. UPDATE: 12/17/2014 I've put 2 coats on my boots since the original review and I am very impressed with Huberd's Shoe Grease. It does not leave a sticky feeling like Obenaufs or the rest, has been keeping my boots protected, and i forgot to mention that the Huberd's doesn't seem to darken the leather all that much like the rest. Ive been doing allot of research and for the most part I have learned that mink oil, regardless if its 100% or a mix in another product, is overall bad for leather over time and WILL rot your stitching out eventually. Mink oil is derived from a mink's fat, hence its an animal fat. The primary reason they put mink oil in other leather care products is because of money. Mink oil really does do what all of the other companies says it does which is soften and condition leather, but the adverse effect of it is, because it is an animal fat, it will rot, and what better way to keep you coming back for new boots, you'll feel good the product is working but with misinformation your actually not helping your leather. Huberd's Shoe Grease does NOT have mink oil in it, and like Obenaufs, from what I have learned by researching, DOES have Bee Propolis in it. If a product has BeesWax in it then it does have Bee Propolis also. Bee Propolis is an anti-bacterial resin collected by honeybees to waterproof and disinfect their hives. Beeswax in general is a universal natural and safe leather protector. I didn't know what to think of the product based on the description, but after I used it, I'm now going to be a lifetime product loyalist. This grease definitely is meant for heavy duty leather and does everything the product description claims; I imagine the oil version would be much easier to apply on thinner/more intricate leather shoes. It's easy to apply by hand, is extremely durable, goes a long way, and smells like a campfire in a jar. I'd recommend doing two coats like it tells you to, because the first coat softens the leather, the second applies a protecting coat. Side note: I found it's easiest to apply with your fingers. Trust me. I use it about once every month and my boots, both my steel toes and my cowboy boots, have lasted and held their own quite longer than I ever could have imagined. This product does an amazing job at conditioning and protecting the thick leather of both. I work in an underground mine where water is everywhere, and I've never had my boots suffer damage from being submerged after I started regularly greasing them. So overall, here's my breakdown: Pros: Easy to use, Cost effective, Smells amazing, Does a great job at conditioning and waterproofing leather, Not filled with weird chemicals if you're against that, Comes off your hands easily. Cons: Doesn't last as long as synthtic waterproofers, so you have to apply it more frequently, Darkens the leather for about a week (that doesn't matter to me though). Give this product a try. This stuff is great. I've used it on all of my smooth full grain leather boots for about 30 years. This is the first time I've bought it on Amazon, but it's the same as I've always used from any other store I bought it from. Just don't use it on suede or new buck. It does darken the color when you first put it on but things go back to normal after a while. My boots get worked in. They are Mall crawlers! That's what this stuff is made for, protect boots that get worked in and make them last longer! Leather boots will never be waterproof, but you can make them very water resistant with this stuff.

This product is a must. After having cleaned the shoes with saddle soap and let them dry I poured a little bit of this shoe grease on a cloth and my office footwear were suddenly shinny like new. It is a grease so it feeds and protects the leather too from water keeping the shoes dry. It is very immediately efficient. On its online site, the company gives pieces of advice on how to use Huberd's leather oil for office shoes if you want more info. I just bought the grease and it works perfectly. This Huberd's grease brand I did not know is from Colorado and has been existed since 1921! What I can tell you is that it makes miracles...and not only on shoes. I tried it to restore old leather armchairs from the 60's and the leather is softer, shinier and fed. It is true that it seems no dry anymore. I thought this product penetrated very easily in the leather despite the Huberd's site recommends the Huberd's Saddle and Tack Conditioner for leather preservation. This 7.5 oz retro box contains only beewax, no animal fat. The can is white with blue inscritions and is easy to open. You will need a flat screwdriver though in order to lift the lid. The wax odor is not pleasant or unpleasant, but not disturbing. It is very economical because you do not need a lot to have a really fantastic result. I am very happy with this purchase, and happy to buy a Home made product from an American company.

La verdad el producto es sumamente caro,creo que hay muchas más opciones a un cuarto de precio que harían la misma función e incluso con más producto. £18 roughly for 200 grams of wax. Quite pricey for a small tin, so you'd hope it would be worth it. Initially I was skeptical as I've tried expensive waxes before however this stuff is GREAT! I tried this product on a very old, worn pair of work boots, I've attached a picture. These boots were extremely cracked, dry and the waterproofing was wearing out. However 2 applications of Huberd's wax soaked in and it has given these boots another lease of life! The wax repeals water very well and because the wax soaked into the leather, it hasn't seemed to show any signs of wearing off in the past week I've been using these boots. And I'm very rough with these boots in my line of work so it shows how good this stuff is! I have now applied these to my other leather boots and also to a brand new pair. All retained there correct colour, repel water perfectly and it also smells really nice. Like others have said, a smoky bacon scent. Don't hesitate because of the price. I did for while and I regret I didn't buy this sooner! Its worth it and a little goes a long way. Thanks guys, a great, natural product and another happy customer :)

Great product for harsh environments. Use Huberd's on my work boots, winter boots and cowboy boots. Caution: It darkens the leather. But, boy, does it work well! My fall tradition is to clean my boots, apply a coat of Huberd's by hand and put the boots by a warm fireplace. Twenty-four hours later, the Huberd's has mostly soaked in. I rub in a second, thinner, layer and leave the boots for a further 24 hours by a warm fire. After that, I wipe off any excess. Huberd's protects my boots from salt stains, softens the leather, and keeps the water out. I swear it extends the life of my boots, too. I like the light pine smell and ease of application. Wear rubber gloves to keep it off your hands, but I find it doesn't bother my hands and easily washes off. I recommend this product and will be buying more shortly.
