OWC 5 Port Thunderbolt Hub - 60W Charging, Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2, Compatible with Macs and PCs

I have had one of these for a year and another one purchased a week ago. Both have worked perfectly. In both cases, I used these more as docks and chargers than anything. If it works in your use case as a dock, it’s half the price to get those functions covered as the thunderbolt docks made by various companies (including OWC). USE CASE ONE: At one of my offices, I do not keep a computer but bring in either my MacBook Air M1 or my Dell XPS13. Both computers are great. At my desk, I have a 27 inch Dell 4k monitor, a stand for a laptop to the side (to also serve as second monitor), and this OWC Thunderbolt Doc. I take out which laptop I want to use for that day (one is better than other for certain things and vice versa). I plug it into this Thunderbolt Hub by one connection (the Thunderbolt 4 cable that comes with the OWC Hub). That one plug in charges laptop and connects it, of course, to all the things the hub is connected two. Those are: - TB out 1: connected to 27 4k monitor (works wonderfully), using Thunderbolt cable to display port input on monitor. I always get great resents going T4 to DP. - TB out 2: connect one of the other Thunderbolt ports (USB-C format) to a 10 outlet USB-A USB 3.1 hub. Into that I have plugged in connections to audio speakers, printer, Bluetooth dongle for mouse and MC Logitech Keyboard (fabulous keyboard), and my circle light for zoom calls, and my Logitech 922c 1080p camera. - TB out 3: connects to a TB3 cable that I use to connect external SSDs when I need one connected. I use the front facing USB-A port to connect flash drives or other temporary peripherals. This all works flawlessly, and has so for a year. Again, I open laptop, plug in one cable, and my computer is connected to, and driving, everything, and I’m ready to work with full monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other accessories. And, it’s worked every time. My TB Hub has not had the problem with the cables coming out to easily that some have commented on and I believe has fixed. This is all working so well and it’s a lot less money than a Thunderbolt Doc. But if you need the dock, I bet OWC’s i is a good one. Of course, Caldigjt makes a nice one. USE CASE TWO: In this case, I’m asking less of the hub. I use it to plug the same Dell XPS 13 noted above in at my other office. That changes computer and also connected by Thunderbolt cable to another Dell monitor which is 24 in 4k. Again, TB cable to display port in on the monitor. I have a receiver for a wireless mouse I like a lot plugged into one of the rear farting other TB ports on a dongle. Yeah, doesn’t need the bandwidth but does just what I need. That leavers a USB-C TB port out for connected an external SSD and an option USB-A port on front for whatever flash drive or other need some up. Again, I pull out my DellXPS13 and plug in one cable and it’s powered, charging, and connected to a 4k monitor and other things I use. These are great devices. They have worked well, no brainer type working well, every time. Very pleased with these devices..

I have a 3 monitor set up and needed a device that could carry large amts of data and that would work with a mac!! everybody says their products work with macs and then when you get them they actually don't fully work with macs or they have reduced functions when you hook them up to macs.!! I feel pretty confident in the OWS brand and have always had good results especially when it comes to macs. you just plug the items and and they just work!! no screwing around with settings and all that. it simple clean and nice!! Plus. they can handle my thunderbolt cables which is just an added bonus!! this was inexpensive, works well, small and compact in design. and I didn't need to call them on this product, but i have used their support on other products and they are always available and friendly and really know their products!! can't say enough good things about this product or the company behind it!!!

Does exactly what it says, expands the number of Thunderbolt ports while also supplying power and a bonus USB A port. The device itself is quite compact but is dwarfed by the pretty large power supply. Does not seem to have the thermal issues of a lot of other thunderbolt devices. Did have some stuttering when plugging my USB mouse receiver plugged into it, this is a known issue related to 2.4GHz interference from USB 3 that was resolved with a $2 usb extender cable and not a problem inherent to this device. I did have an issue with the host port being very loose, OWC promptly sent me a little screw on clip that perfectly secured it. 4/5 stars for the device but bumped up to 5/5 with the great service, suggest they just include the clip as it seems other people had this problem as well.

The BAD: Why should I have to purchase a gripper for your hub...like sooo many others, the cable falls out at the slightest movement...if you can't fix that, at least include the fix via gripper. Trying to set it up, I was very frustrated to have it keep going offline. I ended up rigging it with one of the cord ties from the huge power brick and a screw to secure a nvme drive...ugly, but it seems to be holding. For good will and what it would cost them, they should include at least one! Now, it would be fantastic for cable mgmt if it was designed with the power and computer link on the back, and the 4 usable ports on the front (3 TB, 1 USB 3.2)...as it is, I'm struggling with placement. Beware the plastic on top... it scratches very easily. The GOOD: Other than that, it seems to work great...getting nearly the same speeds as when plugged into my M2 MB pro. I had no need for a dock, but was always plugging and replugging devicecs into my Mac...the additional ports will be nice. I like the light...has 3 settings - off, low, high. I leave it on, as if it's off, I've lost power, if it's white, I've lost connectivity, if it's blue...all is well:) Prior to, I was using 4k USB-C connected external monitor providing charging power to MB and using the other two TB ports for external 40g nvme enclosure and a T7 TimeMachine. Currently, I use the port that was connected to monitor to feed hub, then feed the monitor from there. That leaves me with a net gain of 2 TB and 1 3.2 port. Now, if I can just find a suitable mounting option. We'll see how it holds up.

UPDATE (1/28/2023): The 2nd unit randomly stopped providing video throughput, with less than a year of use. I tried new cables and it didn’t solve the issue. Low and behold, bypassing the dock fixes the problem. It’s too bad the other options are $300+. But you get what you pay for, I suppose. OWC won’t be getting another dime from me and I absolutely do not recommend this garbage product. UPDATE (2/21/2022): The replacement hub resolved the issue with the loose and non-functioning front Thunderbolt port. The replacement hub works flawlessly to pair my M1 MacBook Pro with my external monitor and a handful of other accessories. I'm very pleased with OWC's customer service and extremely quick turn-around on getting the replacement to my door. Bumping this from 1 star to 4. Would buy again. Initial review (2/18/2022): Upon setting this hub up, I immediately discovered that the front Thunderbolt (USB-C) port was extremely loose and the included Thunderbolt cable continuously falls out. I tried a 2nd Thunderbolt cable with the same result. All the rear ports do have a firm connection and appear to function as desired. It's strictly the front port that is broken. Even when I hold the cable firmly into the connection, I still get no response from my external monitor. Removing the hub from the equation and plugging the Thunderbolt cable directly from the MacBook Pro to the external monitor solves the issue. I've submitted a request for a replacement, with the assumption that this one is simply defective. I'll report back with an updated review, once I receive the replacement.

I replaced a large Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 dual DisplayPort dock with this, in order to reduce the size of components on my desk and streamline my cable management. With the Caldigit I had intermittent weird display issues, like monitors not waking from sleep without a restart, and a sudden failure to detect a DP to HDMI adapter; I also didn't use most of the ports, as I only needed it for power delivery, monitor connections and ethernet. I purchased a USB-C Ethernet adapter which works perfectly through this hub, and I connect one monitor directly via USB-C, and the other via a USB-C to HDMI cable. So far display connections work great, no issues returning from sleep mode, and the ethernet speed is just as fast as a direct wired connection. It's very slim, about the side of a pack of playing cards, but fairly hefty, and with grippy feet so it doesn't slide around. My only issue design-wise is the blue OWC logo, but I have this tucked underneath a monitor stand so I don't even notice it.

Don't get me wrong, the OWC Thunderbolt 4 Hub is exactly what I was looking for - a simple way to add more Thunderbolt ports to my iMac without all the extraneous ports like Ethernet, HDMI and SD card readers. The hub works great for that. In fact, I like this hub so much, I've purchased multiple since its debut. The PROBLEM is that even using the included OWC cable, the cable keeps popping out of the uplink port on the hub and unceremoniously dropping the connection to ALL my attached devices giving me the dreaded "DRIVE NOT EJECTED PROPERLY" message. So far I've been lucky and haven't lost any data. I've managed to work around the issue by taping the cable in place (see photo.) But seriously, should I be having to do a tacky fix like this with a $100 piece of hardware from a company I expect (and trust) to put out quality products? If OWC is going to continue selling this hub, they REALLY need to include one of their little ClingOn cable securing devices in the box (and maybe even reach out and offer them to prior purchasers.) This would have been a five star review because the hub works great, but I have to subtract two simply because of the cable problem.

OWC is a trusted brand from which I have purchased several products over many, many years, from drive bays to laptop docks. None of them failed so far, and this TB hub should hopefully follow suit. Plug and play on my M1 Mac Studio, connected to 2 ancient (but still perfectly working) Apple Cinema displays with a DVI to TB adapter as well as an existing Anker USB-C hub which used to sit on the same TB port this hub has now taken on the Mac. It all worked immediately, no glitches, no overheating components, no fuzzy displays, no intermittent Ethernet. Unit feels sturdy and comes with a rather substantial PSU, but given its small size, it requires careful positioning to avoid connected cables from tugging at it. Comes with a short (about 30cm) TB4 cable, which is ideal to locate this hub not far from the Mac. Utterly recommended to anyone who, like me, has a lot gear to connect, and even the 6 ports on a Mac Studio aren’t enough when extra displays are required and cannot be daisy-chained through other devices. Would give it 10 stars if I could, absolute life saver and frankly great value for money. Picked this one over the latest version because had better reviews and I don’t need TB5 speeds.

Vorweg: Habe das TB4 Dock erst einen Arbeitstag in Benutzung. Das Docker hat bei mir jetzt endlich ein altes DP-Link Dock ersetzt, welches leider einige Einschränkungen mit sich bringt z.b. beim anschauen von Kopiergeschütztem Material. Hier geht jetzt endlich alles einwandfrei. ich verwende das Dock an einem MBP 16" mit M4 Pro und verwende 2 Adapter Kabel von USB-C/TB4 auf DisplayPort. Beide Monitore werden direkt erkannt und im Gegensatz zu anderen Docks auch direkt als erweiterte Monitore (NICHT nur gespiegelt). Ich hoffe, dass hilft einigen anderen, die auch bisher Probleme mit 2 Monitoren am Mac haben.
