The first thing I was startled by on opening my new hard drive was the weight. Or rather, lack of. It's like a feather. This is doubly pleasant when you understand that this is, or at least seems to be, a 'spinner'/'platter' drive, to judge by the angelic hum it makes when writing data (the sound is there if you listen closely, but is in no way intrusive). Is that a bad thing? No! Spinner/platter drives are better than EMMC, for my purposes anyway, because they're a lot better at handling repeated writes than an EMMC drive. To qualify that, I purchased this item to store my expanding digital music collection, so I needed something both stable, and tolerant to lots of data writing; an EMMC drive is the former, but not the latter, though the quality does have a bearing. To really ice the cake, at least when I purchased, the drive came with two years' data recovery for free. There are some pieces in my collection which I won't be able to get back if the drive should fail; should that happen - which I hope it doesn't - then the manufacturers will sort it all out without asking me for a penny. The second thing that startled me was the size. For someone with small hands and Arthritis, it's perfect. I haven't taken a ruler to it, but it has about the same footprint as a tobacco tin. Gotta love miniaturisation! What's in the box? 1 x USB external hard disk (size dependent on purchase); it's USB 3 compatible, as indicated by the blue bit in the connector, but it's also backward compatible with USB 2 1 x USB to custom USB connector cable 1 x small amount of guide paperwork No installer needed, no complicated instructions. The drive comes formatted as ExFAT, meaning it will work with nearly any computer (there is an exception where it will need re-formatting, but to be honest I've never heard of the system in question and anyway, it tells you as much in the guide paperwork). I just plugged it in, let the computer register it, and away I went. Considering my collection amounted to 122GB (and has grown since), and it barely made a dent, I'm happy that my music is secure and future-proof. As far as stability goes, only time will tell, but I've used this brand for micro SD cards in the past and never had trouble with them, so I'm confident. All in all, I can only call it a great package for a bargain price.

Bought this at a reasonable price and have been really happy with it! 4TB is obviously a lot but its still compact, just a little bit thicker than the 1/2TB versions, and I've been able to take it traveling with me without any issue. Would definitely recommend, I haven't had any issues so far!

To access S.M.A.R.T features in Linux, found I had to register the drive as a quirk in Grub which shouldn't be necessary so knocking off a star for that. Otherwise, good drive so far.

This probably the best external drive I've had. It's a matter of opinion of course but it does everything you see on the tin and you feel really confident as you see the files transfer fast enough to impress! The confidence comes in you know this hard drive is going to last. The casing, connection to your device/s feel assuring because it solid and effortlessly! I over them moon I purchased this one!

This is a wonderful little USB-powered hard drive, massive in capacity, that I purchased to replace an earlier Seagate model of the same capacity (4Gb) that was misbehaving incurably, kept spontaneously disconnecting and re-connecting. Just one of those things that happens. It was several years old, and I had it backed up on an identical drive of the same age which is still functioning OK, touchwood. To all reading this, I emphasise that you cannot have too many backups, so be prepared! The new drive is superb, and has the pleasing and helpful addition now of a "busy light", so that you can be confident something is actually happening when a computer command is sent to the gadget. These are excellent drives, and every computerised home should have at least one. I am absolutely confident with the Seagate brand, so thanks to all of their staff for great products!

...just what I hoped for... I use this as a backup storage for my laptop. I teach a scripture class online for my church, and I have several power points. I'm able to store weekly PowerPoints with no issues. I have plenty of room to add many many more. I had no issues with the files transferring to the portable hard drive.
