Beautiful book, well-researched, a joy to read for a nature-buff and Cape-lover
So happy I picked up this book. Never thought an author could write a section on the geographical history of the Cape and keep me interested. Graphics and illustrations are top-notch.I’m working through it slowly, while often looking up things I see on the Cape (been a part-time resident for years). The best book I’ve found of its kind for its depth, and planning on seeking out more by this author.I thought I might miss the lack of photographs, but the illustrations are meticulous and beautiful. It's staying within easy reach on my bookshelf as a go-to resource.

Fantastic Cape Cod nature guide!
Chock-a-block with wonderful color photos and illustrations. Highly informative over a wider swath of topics than usually covered. Well organized. For example: the section on sand dunes covers the formation and movement of dunes and then continues to pages of photos and info on the flora and fauna to be found there, making it so much easier to use than a bird book, a plant book, toad guide, etc. The photos are large and clear enough to give you a real chance at ID-ing what you see. Invaluable!

An anazing guideI re to Cape Cod
I reviewed an older guide to the Monterey Bay area, and wished it had more graphics and color photos. If anyone wants an idea of what a really great guide to the natural history of an area is like, this is it. I can't imagine anything better (with the one exception -- that I wish it had pictorial food webs to tie all the species together better. Still, this is magnificent. Clearly it is a work of love by the author and his care shows in every detail. If you are into field guides to habitats, you won't beat this guide.
