The large size is fairly generous. The sleeves are a good length and it would fit your chest size. The overall length for someone your height would probably sit around knee length. someone your height.

Q: is it machine-washable and if so what temperature please ?

Yes. It didn't give a temperature so I washed mind at 30° and it was fine.

Q: is large too large for 38 chest without clothes

Yes...too large. I have a medium gown and a 41 inch chest and it wraps around me almost a third as much again. Medium will be more than ample for a 38 chest. You would be swallowed up in a large gown.

Q: Does it absorb water? will it be good as a towel?

Yes it will absorb any liquid but a towel would be cheaper, though not as comfortable to wear to work.
