Vetoquinol Zylkene, Calming Capsules for Small Dogs & Cats, 14 Capsules

Update 2 months: This is absolutely necessary to keep the peace in my household. I have started to give her slightly more than 75mg, because it wasn’t working as well after a while but giving her 1 pill plus a little sprinkle from the second pill works great. She is just over the weight suggested for the 75mg. I tried to give it every other day but it just was not working as well as every day. We still smoosh it into a few pill pockets and make like a dough and then I pinch off treat size pieces and she loves it! She cries for it every morning and that is what she wants for breakfast lol. She’s now refusing wet food because this is what she wants. Update 7 days after initial review: I have been giving 1/2 of a 75mg capsule twice a day to my cat for 7 days straight now and she has not attacked my other cat in 7 days! We usually have stalking and attacking constantly so to go from constantly to none is very impressive! What I really like is that she still has her personality and does not seem drugged in any way. She just isn’t a psychopath stalker anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️. I plan on continuing the regimen and giving 1/2 to her twice a day. I started by sprinkling half a capsule on her wet food but she doesn’t eat all of it (she doesn’t mind the powder at all) so instead I have been buying pill pockets and I just knead it into the pill pocket like a dough and she eats it right up. This way she gets the full dose and I’m not wasting any. Initial review: My vet recommended that I try this before we put my cat on Prozac. I have two cats. My cats are not litter mates, they are both 6 years old and I adopted them one year apart. Pandora was the second cat I adopted and she has turned out to be a little psychopath. She constantly bullies and stalks and chases and attacks my other cat. It drives me insane and at times it’s extremely draining. I have tried very good quality lab tested CBD, and every kind of feliway spray and diffuser there is. Nothing works. I purchased this about 8 months ago and the first time I gave it to her she full on attacked my foot (not playing, it was very aggressive) and she has never done that before. So I have not given it to her again. Out of desperation, I am revisiting this option, after reading more about how to administer, I think she probably just needs more time to adjust. I sprinkled half of one capsule on top of about a tablespoon of wet food. She ate almost all of it right away. I purchased some pill pockets and I think I can smush the powder into them and feed it to her that way to ensure she gets as much of the product as possible without wasting any. She goes crazy for pill pockets! I’ll gladly update this review once we finish the bottle. Tonight was the first night we started it again and she walked around the house looking for something to get into for about 30 minutes (typical) and then laid down and went to sleep.

My kitty Goose is the only one of 4 indoor cats we have that has had a terrible problem of marking (he’s 10 this year and this began 2 years ago) in one room of the house. Same spot over and over, no amount of enzyme cleaner or cleaning of the area and direct spot cleaning has made him stop. I was at my wits end and didn’t know what other steps to take, before going to the vet (he has been cleared of any medical complications) for prescribed medication, I figured I’d give this a shot. I give him one pill in the morning mixed with a quarter of his squeezable treat and he has completely stopped, he is much calmer overall, and actually seems at peace now. There are no side affects aside from the first dose where he literally looked like he was stoned for about an hour lmfao that has since stopped, and he acts completely normal after his dose (for his weight is recommended two, I only give him one) and he doesn’t notice any taste or smell from it, he gets excited when I shake the bottle in the mornings to mix it for him! I highly recommend this product for people struggling with a cat who has high anxiety or marking issues! From a very relieved cat mom who was ready to throw in the towel.

We have been giving this to our anxious cat for close to a year now. For a while, i couldnt tell if it worked... but after several months she is no longer peeing on anything. She is more cuddly and less skittish. So I would say it works. We open the capsule and mix it in with wet food ever morning.

I have a 4-year-old Maine Coon with a sensory processing disorder. My big boy, Barnum, has trouble processing textures and noises. I have the only Maine Coon in America who HATES to be brushed no matter the brush or comb used. (We have 12.) Everyday noises — the doorbell, microwave alarm, TV volume — completely unhinge him and send him running for his life. Prozac helped to some degree, but it also flattened him emotionally and didn’t fully address the sensory overload. Since adding Zylkene alongside an reduced Prozac dose, the change has been remarkable. Barnum is calmer (no longer flinching when the duct work in the attic pops or the ice maker drops ice), more social, and genuinely enjoying life again. He seeks affection, engages in play, and even participates in brush sessions willingly (with freeze dried chicken incentives!). The difference is subtle but profound — his nervous system feels soothed, not sedated. I give him 1 capsule every morning. 2 made him sleep all day. Zylkene has balanced his sensory overload and allowed his personality and spirit to come back. He’s alert but regulated, playful but not anxious, and much more comfortable navigating the household and daily life. Any owner of a cat with anxiety or sensory issue should try Zylkene. Worth every penny!

The pills are huge (for a cat/small dog, not a person) and cannot be swallowed whole. If your pet will chew it up, the capsule will cut up its mouth for sure. So how do you get your pet to take it? You have to open the capsule and empty the powder into something. Problem is, the active ingredient is 75mg... that's barely anything. The amount of powder for that would be like a pinch of salt. So why all the powder? Unnecessary ingredients. My cat doesn't need magnesium stearate. Anyway, because of all the extra crap, my cat immediately smells it and refuses to eat. But again, the pill is too big to swallow whole, so what do we do? She took it in her food for about a week and then wised up to it, and now she won't touch it. Seemed to work decently, but the manufacturing process is so bad that it's near impossible to give this to a smart/finicky animal. Do better, Zylkene.

I love this for my orange cat . He is very hyper , jumping all over the place and will not be still . He has a lot of anxiety. I give him this and he is so calm . He will just walk up to you and let you pet him and brush him and he sleeps . I give it in his wet food in morning. I don’t give every day . I just give it when I see he is anxious , especially when grandkids are around and going to vet . I love this

Our cat is one we recieved as she needed a new home. She has been terrified of nearly everything for the past two years. We tried everything we could think of. Finally we decided to try Zyklene. Within a few days she was a different cat. She still has some fears but will go outside and even greets visitors where she used to cower under the bed. It may not work that fast or for every cat but we really appreciate what it has done for Sniffy. A plus- she really likes the taste! I open a capsule and sprinkle on her breakfast. She dives right in!

I’d give these a 3.75/5 stars. This stuff does work for both of my cats, BUT there are a few things to note: 1) I use this product on an as-needed basis, NOT as a daily or regular thing. My initial need for it was to keep my 5 month old kittens calm while they recovered from surgery. 2) One of my cats (who is a picky eater) hated this stuff on her food so much she stopped eating her wet food after I put this in it once. I am still able to give it to her, but have to put it in sardines or something that’s a “special treat” or she will not eat it. My non-picky eater doesn’t have an issue eating this mixed in with her wet food as long as I mix the powder in. 3) For about 15-20 minutes after my cats eat this, they get extra hyper, almost like a “burst” of extra energy - I’m not sure if that has solely to do with the medication, but I do think it adds to it. Once they settled down, though, they are noticeably calmer for several hours. 4) I only give each of my cat up to half a capsule at a time/per day & that works well for them.
