It doesn't pull apart. It just twists. So you would have to put one side into a spring loaded holder so that you could detach it from the spring loaded holder.

It's a KEY RING... so it's big enough for a key ring to fit through. You might be able to fit two key rings through the hole. It dose seem quite durable.
