Great budget tubes to get a feel for macro photography
I ordered these extension tubes to try them out and see if I would like macro-photography enough to invest more money in a dedicated lens. Since extension tubes are nothing but empty tubes containing no optics whatsoever, I first asked myself why should I pay more for a name brand set? Then I decided to give these a shot. The above product description isn't complete and there were no reviews, so I was gambling when I ordered these. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. For such a affordable set, the tubes are solid metal and appear well built. The threading clean and clear of metal slivers, so each piece screws/unscrews onto each other smoothly without getting stuck (I also rubbed the threading a bit with a tiny amount of mineral oil). This set comes with 5 pieces - 9mm, 16mm, 30mm tube sections, an SLR body adapter, and a lens adapter. The 3 tubes can be combined in 7 different combinations of extensions (9mm, 16mm, 25mm, 30mm, 39mm, 46mm, 55mm).After testing them out and comparing them with extension tubes I've borrowed from friends, I really can't notice any overt difference. I've added some pictures I've taken with just the 30mm tube and with all 3 combined (55mm) attached to my Nikon D7000 and a Nikon 50mm 1.4d lens. As with most extension tubes, the corners are a bit soft, but those can easily be cropped out -- just make sure you compose your shot knowing the corners will need to be cut out.You should note these tubes are manual and do not send any information between the lens and body, so auto-focus WILL NOT work and if your lens doesn't have a manual aperture dial (like the 1.4d), you're stuck taking pictures wide open. This leads to two major problems: softer pictures and really shallow depth of field.I do have a few gripes about the tubes.1. The tubes aren't labeled with the sizes. There is a 1, 2, and 3, but no 9mm, 16mm, or 30mm anywhere. Not a huge issue since you can tell by looking at them which is which, but it's odd that they took the time to label them 1, 2, 3 and not just put the sizes on there.2. There is no satisfying click when lens is attached all the way, so the only way to tell if it's in there properly is to try to remove the lens without pushing down the release button on the lens adapter.3. The threading isn't aligned perfectly, so depending on which sections you use, the AF/M switch and VR switch on your lens may be on the top, bottom, left or right and not just on the left as it always is when you attach the lens directly to the camera.Overall though, considering the price and quality of construction, I can't complain. I fully recommend these tubes to anyone who wants to get a feel for the world of macro-photography.

Great product for what it is, don't expect more
I'm going to rate this a 4 star because it does exactly what it is meant to do, however does suffer minor problems. Obviously this is just an extension tube and does not have the CPU contacts for modern lenses. That means if you have an autofocus lens, It will not be able to autofocus or meter, you'll also have no control over your aperture (unless your lens has manual aperture ring). With this attached to my 50mm 1.8 AI lens it gives me an incredible amount of zoom. I am able to get the subject just centimeters away from the lens itself. Overall, it does exactly what it needs to do.Cons: This tube is divided into three separate sections of varying lengths, the way you connect them is just through normal threading. This makes it extremely easy to work, however if you screw it on a little TOO tight, you'll be unable to unscrew it without tools. I am talking about if you are screwing the 3 pieces onto itself. It fits Extremely well on the camera, and comes off just as easily as a regular lens. However the connection on the lens is a little finicky, it'll come off, you just have to push the release knob towards the camera in order to remove. Sometimes it may be on too tight and you'll have to twist the lens back and forth about 1mm in order to be able to work the locking screw.Anyways, if you're interested in trying out macro, you cannot go wrong with these tubes. If you want TTL flash/metering, you're going to need the auto extension tubes.Great buy none the less.

Works fine when used carefully
As noted elsewhere the threads on this thing are a bit on the hard to use side, but seem to work fine on the example I obtained. And also if you don't know how to use manual focus and exposure you are OOL and probably shouldn't be operating a real camera anyway. What isn't mentioned in the product description is that this set comprises two rings with NIkon lens bayonet mounts, one male and one female, and a set of different length tubes with the above mentioned hard-to-operate threads. You can screw the male to the female, as it were, for the shortest extension -- the only option I have used -- which enables a lens to subject distance of about 4.5" with a 50mm prime lens and about a 3" wide field of view on my 1/2-frame D200. You can add the other tubes for closer work. It used to be the practice to reverse the lens when working closer than 1:1, but you can't do that with this set so it may not work so well with longer tubes. In general, bang-for-buck wise, this is a fine option for occasional macro work.

Exactly what I needed to begin macro
I am just beginning to explore macro photography with my Nikon D60. This extension tube set works fine with my 18-135mm zoom. No electronic strapping to the lens, so everything must be done in MANUAL settings. One note-- like many DX lenses, my zoom has no manual aperture control. In order to open the lens aperture, I modified the lens-adapter portion of the extension. I used epoxy to attach a small cube of balsa in a position to engage the aperture lever. This gives me a fixed aperture around f8 when the lens is attached to the adapter. I use camera adjustment to select shutter speed, and do a few test exposures. The extension is bare-bones but excellent value for my purposes. If you have manual control of aperture on your lens or are willing to do a little field engineering, this product is fine for the purpose, and economical! My images came out as expected, or better.
