Despite my pictures, the set really is pretty good craftsmanship, definitely good aesthetic value. Agree with some of the other reviews, you want to be careful how you store it and how you lay it for gaming; the hinge can scratch your shelf or table, so just be careful, etc. It's just standard foam molds for the bowls, thought I'm not sure what else to use for something like that (highly recommend keeping the circled cutouts for storage purposes). The black pieces were in fact a bit oily; poured about a quarter of them into ziplock bag (to store in bowl) before I noticed; you can see how oily the bag got from just 40 or so. Used paper towels to pad them down - pretty stinky so you definitely want to wash your hands of what I call cancer-stink. Not sure what the stones are made out of but have a good feel; the white ones even have clam-shell feel; I even got a rare collector black go-ishi (pictured), in addition to the traditional 181 total, but the white ones only 179 (good thing they throw in an extra bag of 5 each for each color. For the price I paid -- awesome buy -- very glad I waited - I think it was like 120 last yr, at least... Oh and I recommend keeping the foam circle cutouts -- storage tip: bag your stones, flip the lids, and lay the foam cutouts on top of them.

This set definitely is everything they say it is. It's very elegant.However, as others have said, it was broken on arrival. For the price I paid, I'm not keeping something that is broken on arrival, so I had to send it back for a replacement. The second one appears fine.The set is well worth the money, as long as it's complete when you get it.

The board itself is made of a hard plastic that looks like wood but it’s still pretty good and the latches on it are actual metal. When I unpackaged everything I actually had to use packing paper on the inside to create a cushion for the top of the stone containers so when I fold it and move it around the stone don’t fall out. I still really like it and I play some games with my dad with it. It’s very weird because some parts of it feel cheap but at the same time it feels like it isn’t. By the way, I recommend cleaning the stones with warm water and soap when you first get them it will make a difference with how they feel, and you will be given a little bit extra with the plastic stones because they know that some pieces will most likely break when you clean them and those are really meant to be replaced so once all that is established, you can start playing.

So I bought this game for my gf and I to learn together. We have played a total of zero times BUT it looks nice on the table. That being said I’ve learned how to play the game with YouTube it’s fairly simple.

The hinges will scratch any surface you play the game on. They portrude out of the bottom of the board when open and laying flat as you would normally play.The latches to close the board are more malleable than a paperclip with a fraction of the strength. They feel like they will easily snap. If not handled carefully they stick out when you set the game up and you can easily crush them.The handles are made out of an ultra poor quality ribbion like material.The containers for pieces do not have concaved lids, so you will not be placing captured pieces in the lids of these containers.The containers for the pieces will open and spill all over the place if you aren't extremely careful when opening the board.The inside of the board is filled with a styrofoam like material with two large hole saw like cutouts for the piece containers.

This is a very beautiful Go set, and I was looking forward to its arrival. It's beautiful in person, the Go pieces, the wooden board the works also as a carrier for the whole set, even the lovely Go bowls that match in color with the board. However, when I pulled it from the box to inspect it, the top connecting back piece had broken off from the top half and was only holding on by the interior cloth. Nailing back together would destroy the aesthetics of the board set. Wood clue works well enough that I didn't have to return it for a refund, but the damage is still inexcusable for the price paid for the item. More quality control is needed or better shipping practice.
