Backroads & Byways of Georgia

I ordered this just before the lock down and it has literally been a saving grace of "to do & find" road trips. My mom, friend and myself have researched and planned our weekend road trips during lock down by using the knowledge and fascinating hidden treasured that is inside the book. We have researched our route and taken off for the search. The author has given wonderful directions and so much more. We all 3 recommend this wonderful book. Do like we did, take a picnic and enjoy the new adventures. We also found additional hidden treasures during our search for the book destinations.

This is an excellent well-written book with wonderful photos of good places to visit in Geogia.

Great book for anyone looking to find the most authentic side of Georgia. Amazing if you love daytrips in the car or if you are in for a full road trip. This book really captures the roads that lead to Georgia's roots and history.I loved this book! It is currently sitting on my coffee table and everyone asks me about it.Thank you for taking all the time to map these drives and take gorgeous images.

Backroads and Byways. Right. I get that part. But I find is strange for a book to cover a state as a travel guide and not even MENTION the cities of Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, Augusta, or Athens. The neglect of Macon and Augusta in particular surprises me because these two lovely, slow Southern cities are decidedly off the beaten path, by definition.The rest of the book is really excellent. The narrative is well written and is sensitive to the fact that you'll likely be traveling by car. It's really good about pointing out important landmarks and locations off the main road that are relatively convenient and fun. The listings given with each drive are not just filler material, but represent a true list of recommended sites.Another thing I really like about this book is its drawing of our attention to remaining antebellum sites throughout Georgia. The Civil War was particularly unkind to Georgia and its infrastructure. Georgia has far fewer pre-1860 sites than its neighboring states because General Sherman made it so. What was left over has either been (in some cases) lovingly preserved, or (in other cases) further bulldozed into the ground in the name of "urban renewal." This book's gotcha covered as to where the cool old buildings remain. Georgia's lovely, diverse geography gets a good share of attention too, and you'll be surprised Toccoa and Savannah are in the same state.

It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but was in no way disappointing...not at all. If you are travelling through Georgia, this book is a " must have." SE Georgia? Forgettaboutit..not covered.I was familiar with many of the places covered but Mr.Jenkins knows EVERYTHING worth knowing about his subject matter ( and not inconsequential "stuff") .It reminds me, in a way, if the old Autoclub(AAA) Triptik on steroids.
