Great recoil pad, try this modification...
I bought this pad for a 1942 Mosin Nagant 91/30, and it was super easy to install and looks about as good as an aftermarket recoil pad can. I simply removed the steel butt plate and installed this recoil pad using the original screws, it took all of 2 minutes. However, other reviewers have stated that this pad is too hard to really absorb the recoil, while others found it acceptable. After inspecting it, I saw the pad has 6 holes on each side of the recoil pad, but they do not go all the way through. This leaves a solid rubber spine down the middle of the pad. So using a drill and bit that matched the hole size, I drilled 4 of the 6 holes all the way through. The only reason I didn't drill all 6 was because one of the holes near the bottom is also where the screw that holds the pad on goes through, which means if I messed up and removed too much rubber it could possibly break loose. Not wanting to risk that I left that hole undrilled, and in the interest of aesthetics I left one near the top undrilled so it would look uniform. I took the rifle out today, and I can honestly say the recoil pad performed very well. Say what you will, but I was in pain after just a few rounds from this rifle before; I shot several rounds from this pad today and now it's just a nice push instead of a sharp kick. I did not fire the rifle with the recoil pad BEFORE drilling it, so I'm not sure how much my modification helped, but I think from simply pushing on it with my hands it definitely is absorbing more energy. It only takes a few minutes to drill the holes out, just have a nice place to do it since all the hard rubber bit make quite the mess. I included a few (bad) pics above so you can see what I did. Hopefully this will work for you as well, and make shooting this wonderful rifle a pain-free joy again :)

Very good. Drill all the holes.
I received it rather quickly. It fit perfectly. It was really easy to install. It took less than five minutes. Just like everybody else in their review said. It did smell strongly or ever like a tire, but the joke’s on you, I’m into that! I like how it smells. And after about two or three days sitting on my desk, I don’t smell it anymore. I saw some people have been worried to drill out some of the holes, but I drilled out all the holes. I had no problems. It’s not gonna bother the screws inside. The screws are still safely below, Benny, out of the way of the holes that you wanna drill out. So I drilled out all the holes. And I’m in the Stone Age without a functioning electric drill so I did it by hand with the drill, bits in my hand. And it hurt. But I did it. And use of a X-Acto knife is helpful. And I used pliers to pull out the rubber boogers. It was hard. I did it. If you have a functioning drill with a call that can hold larger than a 8th inch unlike me, i’m sure you’ll have an easier time. But that’s on me. The product is great. There is an air gap between the wood, and the beginning of the rubber butt stock. For all I know that’s a benefit because it’s a spring laden air gap that will have to be compressed resulting in more shock absorption in a similar way as the holes. I can probably shim and shove some foam in there. After I got it installed, and drilled out the holes, I shoved a recoil reducing slip-on sock over it. it barely fit, but in the end it did fit very snugly. It was hard. I had to use pliers to pull that thing over this and the wood. It was tight. But that’s good because it’s not going to be slipping and sliding or falling off I think. So not only am I using the rubber butt pad. I’m also using a slip over recoil reduction sock and it feels kind of like jelly, like a stress reducing ball. I have not used this at a range since I installed it and I have no idea what it’s going to feel like. But I’m sure my shoulder will thank me.

Mosin Nagant Recoil Pad, a must have.
Hello all, this recoil pad is a defined must have. The Mosin Nagant 7.62 X 54r round has a felt recoil of a O/U 12g shot gun with no recoil pad. So after 10-20 shot you shoulder will go numb. The pros: -Installs in 5 min, 2 screws. -Has a overall good "general" fit to my Mosin 91/30. I did have to bend mine a bit to make it fit the curvature of the rear stack but no big. -Adds about 1 to 1.5 inch to the length of pull, and that is a bonus since I found the stock to be a bit on the short side. -It is made of semi hard rubber so it should last a long time, only time will tell. - Reduces felt recoil, my 16 year old niece can now shoot it with out issue (at a rest, its to heavy for her to hold standing). The Cons: -The rubber pad will stick to your cloths, I had to taped the sides of the pad to fix this. -The fit is not exact. My pad seem to stick out both sides and the top of the stock about 1/16 or so on each side. And about 1/8 inch at the top. Not to much but it does cause the top to grab when I go to solder the gun. I find myself having to push the gun out then shoulder it. Over all I would say this is the best "mod" you can do to this rifle for the price. Made my rifle more enjoyable to shoot, and definitely allows female shooter to join in. *Note: on the seller of this product. I have did/do have an issue with the seller, I have taken this up with Amazon. But the product is great. I had ordered a new sling, well attempting to reach the seller is virtual impossible. I tried for 4 day. I have tried via Amazon nothing, I have tried via their web site(contact us) section, still no response. I did find a number and after holding for about an hour, I was told that the sling it in actuality on back order. Even though it shows to be in stock. Note: the "leave a message option will disconnect you from the system Even better, the agent I spoke with was unable to tell me when they would be getting more in. Or when they would be placing an order to get more from their supplier. Thus I may not revive my sling (and you wont/may not get yours ether). Your mileage may vary but you can count on a very difficult time getting a hold of the customer service if anything goes wrong.

This is an excellent, and cheap
This is an excellent , and cheap, replacement for the steel butt-plate on your M44 if you're looking to reduce recoil. I took some advice from previous reviews and drilled out the holes on the butt-plate to make it a bit more pliable. As it comes, it's very hard, and while it would probably reduce felt recoil, drilling holes all the way through makes it a bit more giving. For a range test, I put 20 rounds of 202 grain soft point rounds through it, 10 rounds of 192 grain heavy ball FMJ, and 10 rounds of 150 grain FMJ through it. I noticed the reduction in recoil against my shoulder instantly, it felt more like I was firing a .308. Obviously changing the contact point from a steel plate to a rubber plate would help, but I was very impressed. Usually after 20 rounds of 7.62x54r I end up with a bruised shoulder, using this rubber recoil pad I had no discomfort. I myself didn't have an issue with the recoil from an M44 before using this, but every time I go out to the range with some friends or family they always refuse to fire my M44 after the first round because of the recoil. So I bought it more for them than myself, but given how much more comfortable it is to fire, I'm starting to like it too. Biggest advantage of that is now the people I go shooting with can use my cheap 7.62x54r ammunition instead of the more expensive stuff.

Very Satisfied
Fit my original m91 with original screws nearly perfectly. In the image the only modification made was me loosely drilling out the holes for some more sponginess, and I will be cleaning them up a bit. I was going to boil the rubber and soak it in oil to loosen it up, but after shouldering the gun in this state, decided that was not necessary. A noticeable improvement in comfort and extremely easy to install. The only downside is the strong tireshop smell, but it is a solid chunk of rubber so that should be expected.

Great product.
I have come to call my mosin nagant "The shoulder buster" and for good reason. Usually 20 rounds leaves me black and blue for a week after shooting it so I knew I needed some padding. First off the install was a breeze, 2 screws and your done. The instructions made me laugh a bit when it suggested using my hands to bend the rubber butt pad. This thing is pretty thick and solid rubber there's no way I could bend it any noticeable amount. I did place one end on the floor and used some leverage to bend it just enough. I haven't been able to shoot with it yet so I can't comment on the actual main function. It does add length and feels a little more comfortable holding it now. The butt pad fit pretty well on my rifle, it certainly isn't 100% though. Knowing how old and how quick they must have pumped these rifles out they are all not going to be a direct copy of each other. The small differences across these rifles would make it impossible to get a perfect match for an add on part. That being said the fitment issues are very minor and could be solved by sanding or trimming the rubber pad a little bit. The fitment wasn't enough for me to knock a star off however, that's how minor it is.

smells bad, need mod, looks good.
First, this thing really does smell awful. I opened the package and my wife told me to get rid of it. Instead I hung it up outside for a week and that helped to diminish the smell, but not eliminate it. So now it is only my safe that smells like industrial chemicals, and not the whole house. Second, it is a little ridiculous to sell a product advertised as a recoil pad that doesn't perform as a recoil pad unless you modify it. Go ahead and drill out all of the holes, no need to leave any undrilled. That will give the pad some give so it will absorb some recoil. Personally, I didn't think the rifle kicked that bad anyway. so, with my gripes up above, why 3 stars instead of 1 or 2? Well, it fit on my 1933 Tula 91/30 very well, and it looks pretty good. The main reason I like the pad is that it replaces that slick steel butt plate. Keeping the rifle tucked to my shoulder with that slick plate was a chore. With the rubber pad, it is much easier to position the rifle and keep it there. Like I said, I don't really think the rifle kicks that bad anyway. So I didn't see too much difference in felt recoil even after drilling out the holes. I like the pad mainly because it helps keep the rifle positioned on my shoulder, and it installed with zero permanent modification to the rifle.

Disappointing. Did Not Fit My 1943 M91/30 Mosin, Generally Flawed
Background: - I got this butt pad because I wanted some recoil relief, and didn't feel like paying close to $40 for the better of the Limbsavers that my buddy had recommended. - I was curious about increasing the length of pull, but I was not looking for a product for that purpose. - The Limbsaver would have been a more attractive option for me if I had more than one long arm that I could use it on, but my next hardest kicker is my Mossberg 500 12-gauge (synthetic stock, light) and I don't mind the recoil on it unless I am shooting a lot of buckshot or slugs, which is almost never. - My Mosin 91/30 is 48.5" long with the original butt plate and was made in 1943 at the Izhevsk (Russia/Soviet Union) factory. Pros: - Looks pretty cool on the gun, once I made modifications to fit it. - Very inexpensive, if you don't count your labor to make it work. Cons: - Felt recoil is reduced almost none and possibly even increases with this pad (will explain later), even if you drill the holes through. - The increase in length of pull is undesirable for a full-sized 91/30. - Had to modify the pad AND my rifle to get it to fit. - Not a cheap solution if your time is worth anything to you and IF it doesn't fit your rifle as delivered. - Overly grippy, catches on clothing when shouldering (I sanded lightly and used a little silicone spray which seemed to help a fair bit). Let me explain some things now... Regarding fit: Millions of Mosin Nagant rifles were made, at several different factories, over multiple decades. When you have production dispersed that much in time and space (and throughout WWII no less) it seems certain that there would be at least some subtle variations in stock materials and dimensions. In my case, the screw holes on the recoil pad were in close to the right place, but they were off too much to fit. The screw on the top of the recoil pad and butt was off just enough to leave a gap of a couple mm (maybe 1/16") between the end of my butt and the recoil pad. Worse than that was the hole in the end of the butt pad that was offset by about the width of the screw from the hole drilled in the end of my rifle. It couldn't be jimmied into the existing hole (I almost wrote b-hole there, sorry), and because it was so close, I couldn't use either existing hole (the one in the rifle butt or the one on the recoil pad) because I would have had to drill one or the other and in whichever one I drilled I would have had two touching holes or basically one big worthless hole. So I had to move over about 1 cm, and drill a new hole in the recoil pad (no big deal) and a new hole in my rifle butt (lame, even if it is always hidden when assembled). I also had to staple a piece of bicycle tire to the end of the butt to fill the gap created by the misaligned top holes (i.e. hole on top of rifle when shouldered) Now, maybe you are saying this is my fault because this product is billed as "M44 Mosin Nagant Rubber Recoil Butt Pad" and what I have is a M91/30. You might be right. In my defense, I am pretty certain that before I ordered this recoil pad I read a number of other reviewers here who said it fit their 91/30's just fine. My hunch is that most people reading my review are looking for a recoil pad for their M91/30, and not for one of the much less numerous M44 carbines. If you do not know the origins of your Mosin Nagant, check [...]which can help you identify what you've got. If you too have a M91/30 built in 1943 (and '42? '44?) in Izhevsk, then I doubt this pad will fit your rifle. Regarding felt recoil: Okay, so this rubber is very stiff as others have stated, seems like tire rubber. And since the six holes don't go through, there is a stiff rubber spine down the center of this thing. I drilled through all six before ever shooting with it, in addition to the extra screw hole I had to put in it, and structural integrity is not an issue here with these mods (and I'm a materials engineer, fwiw). It is still too stiff to deform enough to absorb much recoil. What's worse is that the curvature of the recoil pad is much more pronounced than that of the rifle butt. What this means is that you have a hard peak/point on the lower end (when shouldered) of the recoil pad that will not fit your body and will concentrate the recoil and poke into you UNLESS you put that point in your armpit. I don't know about you, but that is not where I like to put my Mosin. For one I am broad-shouldered, so my armpit is out there and it is hard to get a comfortable cheek weld that way, plus I end up rotating the rifle out of vertical to get that point in the armpit. I also separated my shooting shoulder playing football in high school and it never healed up quite right, and putting it in my armpit is hitting the most vulnerable part of my shoulder. I like to put it on my pectoral muscle (still bench press 300 lbs...natural padding) where it's closer to my center of gravity and my cheek. And I can't do that with this pointy recoil pad. I am going to sand or grind some of the curvature out of it until I can fit it to my pec and try it again, and maybe drill in some more "deformation holes" in addition to the original six (more invested time), and I'd want a drill press for this to drill these holes parallel to the six already there, these would be smaller diameter holes that I'd fit in where I could while retaining enough integrity of the rubber block. Regarding increasing length of pull by 1": If you really have a M44 carbine, at 40", then I could see this being a plus for some people, myself included. But the regular M91/30 is 8" or so longer. And an extra 8+" of barrel (and stock and cleaning rod) out on a long lever... I'm 6'3" and 225 lbs and usually shoot without a sling ("offhand" some say) and this is a heavy gun. You add another 1" to the length of the rifle and you've just added an extra inch of lever for the weight of that heavy rifle to torque you with. I'd love to find a more effective recoil pad that adds 0.5" or less to the length of the gun.

This item will fit your MN, but it is not a perfect fit. You will of course have to remove the original metal backing plate on the butt end, and don't forget it significantly adds to you LOP. Having said that, if you are like me and have long arms, it is a nice addition to your rifle.

Plus it really looks good..
I must be one of the lucky ones... it fit my '44 M9130 perfectly. I did remove the steel butt plate and and compared to the rubber pad and it was an exact match. Gives a much needed length of pull and way more comfort than the steel. Plus it really looks good... like it belongs there. The curve of the pad where it contacts your shoulder is more exaggerated than the steel and therefore fits into my shoulder better. One reviewer was right...this thing stinks so bad... like walking into a tire factory. Look on the confuser for tips on how to at least take the edge off the smell. I think it's going to take a little time to "gas out" completely.

Does extend the length of pull a little bit, but does little to tame the power of the cartridge ( a bit softer than metal plate). Did not fit 100% to the curves of the butt stock, but is to be expected.

Excellent
One of my mosin friends recomended this to me and it was worth it. Went on easy and feels good, now I don't have to worry about my shoulder breaking after a few shots. Anyone with a mosin should definitely pick one up.
