Good quality idli flour, coarse texture
The bag of Hemani branded Idli Rava flour I received was generously sized and securely sealed. While the bag did come with several cautionary instructions printed on it, I am quite familiar with Idli Rava. Though it is categorized as rice flour, it is typically crafted from whole boiled rice grains that are softened and ground into a flour-like consistency. This boiled rice flour is the ideal base for creating a batter to prepare idli, a beloved South Indian dish. When served alongside specially crafted coconut chutney or plain yogurt, idli is a truly delightful treat. In my experience, it sits lightly on the stomach and is easy to digest. One notable characteristic of this flour is its slightly coarse texture, which can give a gritty sensation. However, when I used it to prepare idli, they turn out soft and fluffy. If you happen to find the flour too gritty for your liking, you can simply strain it through a mesh to filter out the coarser particles, resulting in a fantastic final product. Idli can be enjoyed with a variety of side dishes and makes for a satisfying meal or a snack. Some even use it to make rice flour cakes or as a cereal. Personally, I find it quite easy to whip up a batter and prepare idli using a dedicated idli cooker.

Fresh, well milled, well sealed
Just arrived fresh and well-sealed. The packaging is thick enough to protect and store the product. After opening though you need to put it in an airtight container. It's very finely milled, uniformly colored and it looks very clean. It's easy to work with and shape, and it takes seasonings very well.

Every bite has sand like minute particles
This product can be dangerous to the consumers as it has minute sand particles as if grains were crushed with sand/rock particles. I had to discard the entire bag since it was already opened.

Showed up a bit stale
This milled rice showed up with a pretty notably stale smell, it's still within the edible rage but it is far from fresh. Essentially the same as you would expect from name brand Cream of Rice, though, it isn't fortified so you don't get the extra vitamins and iron. Beyond that, despite its being less than perfectly fresh, it's still okay, makes a decent hot cereal, easy to make in the microwave if you're in a hurry, the standard 1/4 cup rice to 1 cup water with a dash of salt ratio and then about 2 minutes in the microwave stirring at the 30 and 60 seconds mark then every 15 seconds thereafter until done, watching for boil over, cooks it well, maybe a bit longer or shorter depending on how hot your water was to start with. Had it arrived fresher I'd definitely be happier with it, I don't think it's a long-term food store option, it needs used relatively quickly.

Hemani Cream of Rice Ground Rice 4 Pounds
A product of India packed in the USA this snowy white cream of rice is excellent for use in traditional Indian dishes but also as a delicious hot cereal. I may have missed it but I found no best by or expiration date on the 4 pound bag. I looked for a date because when I opened the bag I noticed a slightly stale/rancid odor which in its current state did not affect the taste. To slow aging I plan to store it in an air tight container in the freezer. Stovetop preparation is quick and easy with a ratio of 1 cup water to 1/4 cup cereal per serving just bring water and an optional pinch of salt to a boil and then slowly but continuously stir in the rice . When it returns to a boil, lower heat to a simmer and continue to stir for 30 to 45 seconds, then cover, remove from heat, allow to rest 1 minute and serve. It needs time with the cover on to allow steam to permeate the rice or the result will be undercooked and have a grainy texture. The resulting cereal is simple, filling and comforting---and it may be customized with add-ins like chopped nuts, dried fruit, cinnamon, brown sugar or maple syrup, etc. The only ingredient is ground parboiled rice and there are no instructions on the bag. Fine product but it seems a little old.

Really nice bag of rice flour
Huge bag of finely milled rice flour - I have never tried this before, but there are a lot of Indian recipes out there. I picked dosas and I just made them using this flour, water and pinch of salt, making a dough. Then I fried them like pancakes, and they were soft and fluffy. These are great with savory toppings - I chopped up some scallions, chilies and ginger, salt & pepper, mixed it with a little oil and used it as a dipping sauce. Or use sweet toppings, maple syrup, peanut butter or even warmed up nutella -for a sweet treat. I also plan on using this to use for coating foods for frying as well. The bag isn't resealable, so I just transferred it to a large container.

Big bag!
This is a big bag (4pounds) of Rava Flour. I have never used Rava flour before so was excited to try it. It is ground up rice and I figured it may be like cream of rice. I do wish the bag told you how to properly prepare the rice. The bag was sealed and I like that this is a vegan option that I can share when my vegan friends come over. We are still looking for recipes for this.

Nice change of pace.
We've eaten oatmeal as our breakfast cereal for many years. My wife has always liked rice cereals, but we haven't had it on a regular basis. That may change now that we found this quality Idli Rava. It's basically finely milled parboiled rice, which makes for a quick cooking cream of rice cereal. The taste is wonderful and light and easily absorbs whatever accoutrements we've tried, from sugar to honey to fruit, along with different plant-based milks. So glad we found it and look forward to trying it in other recipes.
