An oldie but goody!

This is a great way to teach poetry to children. I have taught poetry for over 18 years and this resource is just amazing. The steps are easy to follow, and perfectly designed. It uses examples of other children's poetry to inspire and support the children in bravely putting their words on paper. The results were remarkable. This is a great resources. I thoroughly recommend it.

I first purchased this book about ten years ago for each kindergarten teacher in the building where I was the principal. It is terrific for teachers to use in showing students examples of poems written by other young children in first draft and then final form. Routman's ideas for encouraging poetry writing with young children are very realistic and helpful,which is why I chose to purchase the book for my new position as a literacy coach in an all-kindergarten school.

Regie Routman comes through again with this wonderful how-to book. She not only provides step-by-step lesson suggestions, she also provides sample poems written and illustrated by kindergarteners. My students were completely engaged and often used these models to scaffold their own poetic endeavors. Even my most hesitant writers were filling pages with poetry!

A perfect guide to help you teach your students poetry! Mine were writing poetry the first day after seeing the samples from other kindergartners. You will write better poetry as well.
