will it cover rust?

Sand (320 or 400 grit) to BARE metal "feathering" edges of old paint.   Remember that any small scratches left by the sandpaper needs to be coated so keep your sanding localized to minimize the size of the repair.  Try to avoid bare metal larger than a quarter.  Clean with rubbing alcohol, make SURE everything is absolutely dry.  You can use a hair dryer for several minutes to evaporate the alcohol and the small amount of water in it.  The warm (NOT HOT) metal will help the paint to adhere also.  Apply several coats 5 minutes apart.  You will determine the number of coats by observing if the paint fills the repair and if it covers the metal to match the color.  Usually at least 2 coats, but more if needed.  Don't be in a hurry to cover the repair area, 3 or 4 coats are much better than 1 or 2 coats with drips and runs.  Heavy coats can give a drip, run, or sag (sometimes call a smile because it looks like one).  If you do get them, the only person that would notice them would be your mother in law.  If she heads toward the MW, distract her.  Don't try to sand them away because it would remove the smooth shiny surface that deflects dirt and stain.  If you feel you must, restore the shiny surface with a final coat (that doesn't run).  Wait at least 24 hours before using.I think that those who had an unsuccessful repair either didn't sand sufficiently or painted over moisture, dirt, or oil.

Question 2

Will it work where the door meets the cabinet?  Rust is forming under the paint on this surface.  Condensate seems to seep in here.

For me it was a temporary fix.  Even with wire brushing and alcohol cleaning the rust came back and we finally trashed the microwave.

Is this paint safe to use? Does it cause rediation leaks?

Accepted Answer

It is safe to use as a touch up paint for the interior surfaces of a microwave oven. Just follow directions and leave door of oven open for paint to dry after touch up. It does not factor into any possible causes of microwave leakage.

Question 4

The wheels wore the paint off the track.  How many bottles are needed to repaint the track?

One bottle is all it takes to repaint the glass platter wheel track. Spray VERY LIGHT COATS. Let each coat dry before respraying the next coat, otherwise the paint will 'gunk-up' and will easily peel off. You will find that although the paint hides discoloration well, it does NOT stand-up well to constant-contact of moveable/abrasive items that very-easily wears the paint away.
