One out of three - this is the good one

Cute theme using the dual meaning of "odd." This book works for my four year old. The illustrations are a bit crowded at times and over the top (unexplainable giant football players looming like a kids-rated horror movie, lizard tails appearing on humans and dogs which have nothing to do with the plot, etc.)This book would have worked just as well if the authors had stuck to the odd number discovery, as that in itself leads to some silly situations or even seek-and-find counting of items, rather than increasingly fantastical and grotesque imaginary scenes. As a mom, a couple of times and I'm done with it .. due mostly to stylistic presentation. The images of a teacher with five arms and three eyes sear into a kids' mind, and when the attraction due to the scariness of that page wears off, I'm not sure we'll be reading it much more. That being said, we purchased the set of three: One Odd Day, My Even Day, and My Half Day. My kid has just learned these concepts and I was hoping to bring them to life a little. However, this is the best of the three. The second one is a nice counterpart, but repetitive from the first because it lacks a plot except to be strange, and to convince the creators of their decision to find the same hook ("odd day") for this book, it's a little more spun. However, My Half Day is so poorly written, I can't believe that editors wouldn't have taken the writing "team" to task (yes, 2 authors to write such insipid rhyming tangentially-relevant text that is non-sensical ! leaving the illustrator to grasp at straws with the tale..) As a set, the books' themes and ending academic exercises have so much potential. My four year old loved counting/coloring the even and odd squares, amazed at the new concept of "square numbers" and seeing which items had buddies.Because of this, it seems like a crime to get to the third book, which is pure garbage. The "odd day" theme has run crashing into senselessness, and zero math-based framework for what the series seems to promise will be a book about math. In the sense of plot, in the sense of math instruction, in the sense of having any interesting intellectual challenge for the reader to figure out, it's just bad. Martians, more looming scary football giants, writing stretched over several pages about archery and canoes without mention of fractions, "riding in an empty van, clattering like coconuts in a trash can". What in the world?!?! Kids themselves could have helped write a better story.Kudos to the illustrator for putting up with it, but the job led her into more and more grotesque and surrealist images, usually ending with multiple legs sticking out from under the kid's bed, which doesn't relate to math or any characters introduced. My kid now believes fractions are just silly-sounding numbers, as if they are not something to bother with because, well, the story is confusing, silly, and a lot of multiple-eyed, winged, several-headed, reptilian looking things. All in all, I wanted these to be great, they were okay. And I would have politely asked for the creators to stop at the first two volumes.

Some of my students are having difficulty with remembering odd or even rules, so I got this book (and the companion book) to see if that would help. I will be using this book to help enrich my students learning experience. My students have proven that they learn really well with an interactive book. Thanks for making education fun!
