I can't fill it more than a little bit without having to put the plunger back in and taking it out to add a little bit more liquid. Is there a trick?

I’m not really understanding your question. Are you unscrewing the whole plunger apparatus from the container to fill it? Because it sounds like your taking the plunger apart rather than unscrewing and taking it out of the tank.

Does the pressure release valve help so that when i unscrew the sprayer lid, the insecticide doesn’t spray up into my face? thank you!

Yes. Works very well in that capacity.

How does one know where spare o rings fit in sprayer without a diagram?

Anywhere there is a screw cap, there is most likely an o ring inside, to prevent any leakage.
