It is an insightful overview of Haiku and its close cousins such as Tanka and Haiga, but I wanted less American examples and references and more Japanese examples.

It can really get you started on the way of the samu..of writing witty and poetic haikus :).Fun and well written.

Timeless classic for keen readers and writers. I’ve got this book from my library first, and then purchased my own copy to be enjoyed at my own pace.

I have actually written haiku in English myself for about fifty years, so I bought this book on the principle of "You are never too old to learn", but not actually really expecting to discover much new. To my surprise and delight, it actually served as a kind of stimulating and inspiring refresher course', and a good reminder of the principles and practices of writing good haiku. There are lots of collections of English haiku, many with haiku written by well-known or famous poets, but I was again surprised and pleased to find that Ross' book contains a lot of really good, and often excellent examples of both Japanese and English haiku, including a few of the author's own, in addition to descriptions of other varieties of Japanese poetry and prose. If you are starting out on the exciting new path of writing haiku, or even, like me, are far from being a newcomer I can truly recommend this brilliant and very accessible book.

Written in a way that is easy to follow and use as a basis for one’s own writing and also for the teaching of haiku. Explains well the difference between haiku and senryu and expands to haiga, tanka and other forms. I recommend this book to anyone who is just beginning or already along the road to writing these wonderful forms of poetry.
