Our East End: Memories of Life in Disappearing Britain

Fab Read!!
I have read many books on the history of East London, and in my opinion this is definately one of the best. The author writes in a totally unbiased, accurate way. He mentions things which i only ever heard from my mother, who was born and bred in Plaistow told me: of how as children they would play outside their houses and make little grottos, by gathering broken pieces of coloured glass and any small items they could find, she never actually said that they would charge people to 'view' their artistry, as it says in the book, maybe she did, maybe she didnt, i only know she wouldnt even let my brothers, myself or my sisters join in with 'penny for the Guy' as she considered it begging lols! The author also mentions how Gay men would dress up and dance and sing through the streets, which reminded me of her telling me how when as a child, sometimes men would go along the street, dressed as females, wearing a lot of make up and high heeled shoes, and of how she and her friends would laugh and run alongside them. The book was thoroughly enjoyable and educational - a big thanks to the Author! :)
