The standard opening is 3 1/2 inches but ours is closer to 4 1/2. That would explain why the previous owner installed a 4 1/2 inch floor drain in our kitchen sink, which caused it to drain super slowly as a floor drain is meant to. It was probably all that was available to them at the time they were installing the sink. The install was straightforward and I did everything with a pair channel lock pliers. I did not use the included nut for the bottom of the assembly because I was using a different tailpiece I ordered specifically for this project that I was able to cut down to fit the existing plumbing. It is of a very thick casting. By the time I put it in place and attached the hold down nut, I only had a couple threads left to work with for the drain pipe nut to attach. I barely got by with that one. Other than that, it's perfect. **Q: What is the outside diameter of the widest top part where it sits in the indented part of the sink? (Where the putty usually goes)** A: the top of the item is 4 1/2" to the widest part and should give you about a 1/16 th to play with to make sure it fits.Great item and I was very happy!
