I have the trainer and I need to go up. Is the .5 worth it or should I go right to the one?

Depends on how good you are at the trainer. I found that I could hold the trainer closed for 40-60 seconds, and then I skipped up to the #1.5. Within two days, I was able to tap the new one closed. My buddy could only close the #T for about 4 seconds, and he was unable to close the #1 for around a month of training. That should be your guideline. I wish I had skipped from the #T to the #2 to get something that would be a challenge for a while, but I think the 1 or a 1.5 would be a good stepping stone as long as you can close the T with reasonable strength.

I have read that the CoC rip up your hands. Any way to minimize this?

Personally, I already have rougher hands because of the knurling on my Olympic bar. If you do not have a physical labor career, or have sensitive skin - I can understand this being a problem. The grip/knurling is quite rough on the grippers. Most of the abrasion is caused however by the grippers moving within the hand while squeezing. Using chalk can really help this. in fact, I have ordered chalk from Amazon - it is called "Chalkness Monster" https://www.amazon.com/Chalk-Ness-Monster/pages/12080130011 there is a link. It is really cheap, and after like two months, I have not even used one piece...and I lift 4 times a week with it too. If you want my honest opinion, try to tough through the pain and abrasion, because once your hands are toughened up, you will have a monster grip to match. Sometimes, to make an omelet, you have to break a few eggs. Good luck! Absolutely GREAT product BTW.

Will these build your forearms? Also, how do I decide which strength to get?

If you are a regular at the gym or use your hands for any sports activity, then get the trainer (100lbs). About the forearms, you won’t notice much change in the size of your forearms, but your grip strength will imporove a lot.

Is there anyway to stop the noise these things make? Just a week in and they squeek like mad.

Regarding your Captains of Crush gripper, a squeak is not uncommon—it is the result of how the coils rub against each other, and don’t worry, it’s not an indication that something is seriously awry. If the sound bothers you, a drop of any light lubricant, like WD-40, should eliminate or at least reduce it. One customer solved the problem by slipping a sheet of fabric softener (which has a coating of “wax”) in between the coils while squeezing the gripper, then releasing the gripper, allowing the coils to rest against the sheet, and then regripping/releasing to remove the sheet.
