In Asian philosophy, the concept of Yin Yang is used to describe how seemingly contrary forces are actually interconnected and interdependent, supporting each other in the natural world. These complementary opposites thus only exist in relation to each other (for example, light cannot exist without dark). This is a central concept in many traditional Chinese ideology and principles including science, philosophy, different forms of martial arts, as well as traditional medicine. Nothing symbolizes this concept better than the Yin Yang (Taijitu) symbol of two fish-like figures flowing and transforming into each other, maintaining a balanced whole. This version of the Yin Yang symbol is made of Onyx and White Mother of Pearl with a beautiful solid 14K Gold border and folded bail. The "eyes" are cut from the opposite stones and hand-inlaid into each side to complete the design. The pendant measures about 26mm in diameter (for comparison, a US Quarter coin is about 24mm in diameter) and over 2mm thick. Because the stones are genuine and hand-cut, the actual item may appear slightly different than pictured.
