Dangerous! Buyer beware. Died after 2 years of occasional use
TL;DR: This worked, but is now dead and dangerous! My house is from 60s and I'm a diyer on a small budget. I've done a small amount of electric work and have a basic understanding of electricity, but I know that this tool should have alerted me to voltage when I used it yesterday. Please be safe and trust another tool when working with electricity or with any project that you find a wire. The voltage meter worked when it arrived. It needed a very fresh battery to accurately test voltage, which was only a minor annoyance, but it worked at the time. The prong is too wide to fit into a tamper proof outlet, but the price was right and I was happy. Now, 2 years later, I grabbed a fresh pair of batteries and started to cut the drywall it didn't warn me of a voltage in the seemingly random romex wire I found cut inside my wall when I was running a new outlet. Thankfully it was wrapped at the end with electric tape, because it was connected to a circuit! I tried to pull the wire and found it wasn't able to be pulled, then my suspicion rose and I checked the voltage meter against an outlet I knew was on and realized it failed.Overall, I'm really disappointed that I didn't buy a quality tool since now I'm buying this tool again and I'm outside the returns window with this tool.

Did not work upon arrival
Purchased this item. Arrived in good condition. However when I went to use it the product did not work. Thought it could have been the batteries shipped with the unit were bad but new batteries did not help. Could not get unit to function at all. No lights, no sounds, dead. I have owned and used these tester pens before. Unfortunately by the time I was able to get to my project the return window had closed. Stuck with a dum tester.

It tests no voltage!
Green light comes on, flashlight works. But voltage testing capacity is zero. When placed right on top of any live receptacle, the green light just remains green, with no beeping heard or flashing red seen, to tell you of the presence of voltage. Thus, this item is of limited in its usefulness to 1) a tiny pen light 2) a festive green light to signal some sort of holiday spirit.A voltage tester it's definitely not.

Great for old homes with sketchy wiring.
I have an older home that I've slowly been replacing the electrical. I find this gizmo to be quite handy for preventing accidental electrocution. I purchased after running into and outlet that was actually tied to two different circuits, the bottom half on one and top on another. I thought I flipped the right breaker, but only killed power to the top half. Needless to say, I figured this out the painful way. This inexpensive product gives some reassurance before working on any electrical.

... have a Fluke voltage tester at work and I like this one better
I have a Fluke voltage tester at work and I like this one better. The built-in flashlight and green/red indicators work very well.I used it to double check during the install of a ceiling fan and over the oven microwave. Since I was installing those after the kids went to sleep, I used the flashlight walking out to the breaker box, and to verify I was turning off/on the right breaker.

Needs to be recalled and redesigned
This is a nicely made tester with good features--red and green lights, mini-flashlight, but it is also, unfortunately, dangerous. The probe does not fit into tamper resistant receptacles (at least those made by Leviton)--it is too thick. As a result, when the tester is pressed against the hot slot of these outlets it falsely signals green/no current. The tester needs to be recalled and redesigned with a thinner probe.

Product works perfectly
This non-contact voltage tester was sent to me for a fair and honest evaluation. Consumers should be aware that this is a non-contact meter and although the very front of it appears as if it should be inserted into an outlet, that is not the case. It is simply a spacer to ensure that the meter is not in direct contact with any electrical wires. (Please see photo.) That being said, the meter works perfectly well and is an excellent value for the price. Under normal circumstances I would award this product five stars, however, the instructions are very poorly written for the intended market. In fact, there is not even a clear indication of how to release the bottom slide to insert the batteries. The written communications must be improved for this product. It is not even consistently labeled on the Amazon website, as the 'M' in Dr.meter is not capitalized in this case. While criticism of the poor language and omissions in the instructions may appear picky, this product is directed at the North American market and all communications made to that market should be clear. Quality Assurance refers to the entire product packaging and communications. That being said, the product itself works perfectly.

One cool gadget
This is cool. Checked it out immediately upon arrival. Tested a receptacle.. it works. Tested a line cord... it showed line to be live. Tested a lamp with a busted bulb. Showed lamp having power so bulb is bad. Tested a switched extension cord... it showed live up to the switch and monitored voltage as switch was opened and closed. So this can detect voltage through wire insulation.. Has a bright light. It comes in a plastic pak. If you slide the cardboard piece on the back you can actually open and close the plastic holder like a storage case.I threw the cheap one from HF away..... I'm going to buy another one of these as they are worth keeping several around the house. I wonder if this can pick up the voltage from a spark plug wire.... worth checking out. Also want to see if this works on christmas light strings...
