Winner of the Autism Society of America’s Dr. Temple Grandin Award for the Outstanding Literary Work in Autism A groundbreaking book on autism, by one of the world’s leading experts, who portrays autism as a unique way of being human—this is “required reading...Breathtakingly simple and profoundly positive” ( Chicago Tribune ). Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, communication problems, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now, this updated and expanded edition of Dr. Barry M. Prizant’s Uniquely Human tackles new language such as shifting from “person-first language” to “identity-first language,” diversity of identity in the autism sphere, and the future of autistic advocacy by amplifying the voices of autistic and neurodivergent individuals. “A must-read for anyone touched by autism…Dr. Prizant’s Uniquely Human is a crucial step in promoting better understanding and a more humane approach” (Associated Press). Instead of classifying “autistic” behaviors as signs of pathology, Dr. Prizant sees them as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports that will lead to more desirable behavior and a better quality of life. Uniquely Human is a “brilliant” (Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes ) approach to autism in the modern age that provides “common sense [and] practical advice” (Temple Grandin, author of The Autistic Brain ) drawn from Dr. Prizant’s four-decade career. It conveys a deep respect for people with autism and their own unique qualities. Filled with humanity and wisdom, Uniquely Human “should reassure parents and caregivers of kids with autism and any other disability that their kids are not broken, but, indeed, special ( Booklist , starred review). Serviço e conteúdo: nota 10! Qualidade do papel escolhido para a impressão: sofrível!
Serviço de entrega e o conteúdo do livro são excepcionais. A qualidade do papel escolhido é horrível (papel de gibi)! Você tem dificuldade de fazer anotações, com medo de rasgar as folhas. Uma obra desse naipe deveria ter tido um tratamento editorial diferenciado. Lastimável!

Great for autism parents, and honestly helped me understand my own autism a little better too!
I'm loving this book so far. It talks about autism in the way I've always viewed it as an autistic adult. A lot of the "advice" I've been given has come from a place of misunderstanding that suffering through life with no accommodations should be what we strive to do with our son like its a virtue or something. This book tells us to ask why, and has really helped change my thinking AND helped change not only mine and my son's relationship (ours was based on understanding and accommodations, but I had no idea how to implement that) but also my husband's relationship with him which was struggling. I see them starting to thrive now too by using the concepts we've already learned from the book even though I'm only halfway through it! My husband is yelling less and my son is melting down less. For example, my son used to FREAK OUT at every diaper change but just by giving him a pillow so he's not laying all the way flat, getting a wipe warmer, changing the way we lift him to remove and replace the diaper, giving him a heads up that we are about to do a diaper change while we walk towards the changing area, and giving a countdown before we touch him with the wipes - has him having ZERO diaper change meltdowns basically overnight definitely less than a week, he isn't kicking and swinging or fighting or screaming or crying at all! Its really helped us all to ditch a lot of stress and tears. We try to see the world the way he does and it helps so much. He's even communicating with us more! This is definitely a must buy and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.

Useless book
Feels like reading a anger management book. Meditation learning book. Examples given are so unrealistic. Nothing new to lear as a parent. May be for someone who doesn't has a child yet but for someone who already has kids its useless.
