Writer, Walker, Cyclist, Whatever...Never give up!
I knew nothing about the author until I discovered and joined her Everwalk Nation initiative last year.I am a walker and recreational /commuter cyclist who does not drive a car.I am a writer/blogger and photographer who has written quite a bit about gratitude and never giving up so I recently bit the bullet and bought this book.Let me get something out of the way, immediately...There are some people who may be turned off by the sexual orientation and political views of the author...if you let that be the deciding factor in whether you purchase and read the book, or join her walking initiative, then it is your loss and a huge mistake. This is a memoir sharing the life of someone as she experienced it, and those events, the good and the bad and how they shaped the adult she eventually became, are a part of the story she tells, but only a small part.Yes, you learn she's gay and you can't help but wonder how the bad in her early years led to this, but it is her life and she moves on from the admission of her orientation and only lightly touches on the loves of her life afterward. Her life as a swimmer, broadcaster and author and her repeated efforts at the Cuba Swim, until eventual success, is the major focus of this book and rightly so.With the help and support of all the many people in her life, gay and straight, she "found a way" to overcome many challenges in her life and succeed. What she went thru, the difficulties faced and how she overcame them as she finally succeeded on the swim make for interesting, gripping, reading. Her message about never giving up and finding a way will resonate with anyone struggling to succeed at something in their life.If you are a walker don't let the long distance walks of Everwalk Nation keep you from joining...You will find like-minded people and support and encouragement even if you only do walks of a couple miles to a dozen or so.UPDATE- Sept. 11, 2019: I became Everwalk Ambassador #83...While I am unable to lead 1st Saturday Walks, due to my work schedule, I am an advocate for getting out and exploring your community and city on foot and for Pedestrian Safety.Onward!

Dream or Obsession? Good Book for Discussion
"Find a Way" by Diana Nyad was our book club book for July 2016. This is the story behind ultramarathon swimmer Diana Nyad's dream of swimming from Cuba to Key West. There is a lot to admire in Ms. Nyad's struggle to become the first person to swim from Havana to Key West, without a shark cage. Her first attempts were in her late 20s, then after a 30 year hiatus from swimming, she began training again at age 60, culminating in a successful swim at age 64. The fact that she could accomplish such a feat, swimming 110.86 miles in open water battling currents, jelly fish and more for 52 + hours is truly amazing, but what makes this book a good book for discussion, is the deeper backstory. Why was she so driven? How much did the horrors of her young life factor into her determination? Was this a dream or an obsession? She could never have accomplished it without the support of so many loyal and equally dedicated friends and teammates - but at what cost to them?I would give this book 2-3 stars for it's uneven writing style - the editing could have been better. I had a hard time starting it but I gave it 4 stars because there are truly so many issues to discuss and a lot of interesting information on the dangers and complexity of attempting such a swim. I learned a lot about the Gulf Stream for sure. Personally, while admiring her accomplishments, I did not find Ms. Nyad likable but much can be forgiven someone who has suffered greatly...and then there is the controversy in the swimming community surrounding her last swim... I would recommend this book; the reader may have mixed feelings about Ms. Nyad, but hers is a story worth reading.

inspirador

Awesome journey very inspirational
To me nothing has been as inspiring as Diana’s journey. I am sure a million others will be similarly inspired to bring out the best in themselves. Thanks a ton to Diana for her heroic efforts. Thanks to her awesome team.

Grandios
Grandiose Biographie.
