I was wrong as this works much better. I used a dowel which works fine if it fits the curve of the gouge - but I did not always have the right size but figured it was β€˜good enough. I used scrap thin flat pieces on the straight sided ones, even though it was slower as you had to to both sides, but was not easy to get the point. I was teaching someone else how to sharpen and got this partially to show you don’t need, that my way was the best way. But this is both faster and it gives a better edge. So do yourself a favor and get one. Afterwards, I finished with the Tormek Honing Compound PA-70 on another leather slop. Awesome results.. You have to experiment that will fit your needs. **Q: Does the block have concave areas for gouges?** A: Each "hill" on the block is a different shape so you can apply the gouge tool face-down on it. So no, no concave areas, per se, since the cutting is done primarily from the top side, which you turn face down and drag across the "hill" that best matches the shape of the tool (like in the picture) **Q: Will this work with my micro v shaped tools? I have sizes 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mm tools.** A: Yes it will, I use this on all of my carving tools, large and micro.
