Free Enterprise Hardcover – 31 Mar. 1994

My wife Inga Hunter, who's Jamaican on her father's side, loves Michelle Cliff's writing, Her copy of Free Enterprise was lost in a house move, and this order was to replace a book which is dear to her heart.

As a rule I do not read novels unless they are historically relevant or tell some social story. This one does tell a story in a historical context. That is why it held my interest from the beginning to end.

The main problem for me was that I was expecting a biography of Mammy Pleasant, not a novel. That's my fault for not reading the description better. That said, I was already somewhat knowledgeable of the main character, and felt that the novelist had erred in over-sexualizing her to the detriment of telling a more accurate story.

This is a great book, I read this for a college class recently. A recommended read by a great author.
