Why does my 1134 quit pumping greese after a greese cartridge replacement?

It get air in the gun when you change the cartridge just like every other grease gun made. I have owned at least eight or more I have four at the present and they all have to be primed when you replace the grease cartridge. You just pull the handle at the end and turn it till it locks and push on the handle while pumping the gun and it will prime. After it primes then it will pump grease till you have to change the cartridge again but it does not always have to be primed sometimes you get lucky and it primes on its own. This is by far the best grease gun I have owned it has great pressure and is easier to pump than my old pistol grip which broke after about forty years and it is much much better that the Chinese one I bought from Wal-Mart for twenty dollars just before I bought this one.

How do you know where the gun is made before you purchase it?

You don't, unless you read some of the Amazon reviews where the country of origin is mentioned. But to be sure, I looked at the box mine came in, and prominently displayed on the end flap is, "Made in India."

Any insights into the direction the plunger "cup" faces for using cartridges? I wish someone would post a picture as the instructions are bad.

I believe the cup will face toward the end with the hose on it. The direction you will be pumping the grease to the fitting.
