Bulb Bopper works but might require some serious muscle but it gets the job done!
I bought this as a gift for my wife. She needed to plant a bank of bulbs this past Fall 2014, and this device made fast work of it. Warning! If your dirt is clay or shale or has lots of rocks and you use a 120V corded drill, the twisting torque of the drill can put a heavy and occasionally violent load on ladies' hands and arms. Unfortunately, my portable battery powered drill was too weak to drill into clay soil and would simply stall. After watching my wife drill her first hole with the 120V drill, I took over the job as the powerful drill almost flew out of her hands when she hit a some hard clay about 2 inches below the surface. And my wife works out 5 days per week at the YMCA (power pump, biking), so she is no wimp. I am a fairly strong guy, but even I had to put out some serious effort to drill holes in our clay soil. But if the person drilling can hold onto the drill (I used an accessory drill torque handle) then this Bulb-Bopper hole drilling device can do the job rather well, rather quickly. Working together, my wife and I planted about 25 bulbs in about 30 minutes - once we got our rhythm down. The accessory wooden stick was occasionally used to clear the Bopper of packed in clay - very easy to do.

Completely wasted my time
Does not work. Completely wasted my time. I really wanted it to work too because I really needed to save time to plant my tulips but I was very disappointed. I had about 140 tulip bulbs to plant and I bought this to make it much easier and faster to plant because I needed to plant them before the frost. I was very busy with work and I didn't have time to manually plant them. So I bought this to speed up the process, but it didn't help me in any way. I was very frustrated because this product had good reviews and I was really trying to make it work. It might be because I had a little bit harder soil, but the point to me was to use it for harder soils because I could easily plant the bulbs in soft soil. Maybe I wasn't using it right or something, but I tried it with a corded and cordless drill and they both had the same results. I found that the masonry bits, although they make a smaller hole, were more effective to me than this. I was able to make a few small holes next to each other and then plant a bulb. I did eventually just get a manual tool to plant the bulbs because it was effective but it took a really long time.

A must have tool for bulb planters
I've read reviews where the writers criticized this product because their drill wore out when using it. That's an issue with the drill and not the product.I used a heavy duty Dewalt drill with two batteries on a winter bed that was prepped for pansies in the fall, but on which I did no prep at the time I was planting the bulbs.Once I got the hang of it, I was totally thrilled with the product. The depth that it provides was perfect, 6"-7", for tulips.I highly recommend it and am sure I will own this sturdy tool for many years to come. I cannot see it every wearing out. If it gets dull, I'll have it sharpened.Get one and you'll too be delighted with the reduction in effort it provides for bulb planting.

Great for planting bulbs
This gadget works great, especially in soils that are more more sandy rather than clay-like. Some areas in our yard had difficult 'heavy' soils. For that type I needed to work in some peat or compost so that it is easier to work with. Overall, I am very pleased with the bulb bopper, and makes planting of a hundred some bulbs a whole easier. Make sure the soil is relatively light before starting. I highly recommend this bulb bopper.

Superior construction
The tool is superior in construction to many other augurs I have used. The advantage has a cost in poorer soils. The very stable semi closed channel requires much more cleaning......thereby slowing the process of planting. This is not a problem in well developed beds.

OMG, this is awesome. What a time saver!!! My husband drills the holes and I follow behind him with the bulbs. We planted all of our bulbs last fall in about 30 minutes!!! I would definitely buy this again.
