I purchased the Star Cat external cd/dvd drive for less than $15, based on customer ratings. I have connected it to my laptop at home and it worked well for watching original dvds, but I was unable to play purchased copies of dvds either at home, or through the Mac mini at work. When I asked for help from my school's tech support, they made disparaging comments about the cost-related quality of my unit but they did not offer any constructive assistance. I feel like it may be a low-end unit, but it works on my home computer, so I will be glad to use it for that purpose.

My drive on my mac went out a while back, I eventually needed a drive to download hardware and software. I also needed to write and rewrite some data. Works great may not run very fast but fine for what I need it for. Use the backup plug for more power but don't run at fastest speed if you are burning a CD. Go bout 8x speed and you won't have no problems. Still all and all a great product for the price.

I ordered this because my DVD drive on my Macbook Pro stopped working and I still need and want to be able to watch movies and read CD's with my computer. As soon as I opened it, I plugged it into my Mac to test it. I used both USB plugs as the booklet that came with it talks a lot about having proper power supply. I couldn't get it to work properly. I tried it with two different disks in case the problem was with my disk, but it wasn't. The problem is with the player. It lights up, it shows up on my computer, and it goes to the first screen, but when I click to play the movie, it just plays like a millisecond of it, then freezes up. If I wait a long time, it plays another millisecond, then freezes again. I give up on it! I'm sending it back for a full refund!This is an edit of my previous review because the company sent me another one (free of charge) which did work with my Mac.

Works with Linux with some effort and matches my asus chromebox(doesn't work with chrome). It can get loud at times, but if you're far enough away from it normal sound drowns it out.Edit: Using Ubuntu it would not recognize anything until I booted up Kodi which then the DVDs played with no hassle.

The external CD drive that we received from StarCat worked great. We just plugged it into our Mac computer and it started working without any trouble at all. But best of all, I received an emai from Megan, their customer service manager, today. She wrote to remind me that I have a 36 month warranty and if I ever have any trouble with it, contact them and they’ll take care of any problems.

What a great little device and such an awesome price. You can't go wrong with this item. It was the size of a cd case roughly and absolutely crushed it when it came to portability and ease of use.

Hasn't worked on any mac I've tried. Crashes finder and fails to load anything for more than 30 seconds.Works great for PC though.
