Is this waterproof?  I want to measure the tension on a surfboard leash.

Accepted Answer

It doesn't seem to have anything that would suffer from temporary submersion.  However, it determines tension in cables that are fixed at both ends by measuring the amount of force required to deflect the cable.  I'm not sure how this would work with a surfboard leash.

which Loos gauge should I use for "#8 rod rigging??  thanks.

The gauge that you need is a RT-10. Good for 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 rod sizes.

Does this work with rope? I want to measure the tension on things like paracord (~4mm diameter) without leaving a gauge in the system.

You may want to contact the Company to see if they make a measuring Tool for Rope that operates in the same way their Cable Tensioner works. 
Due to the various 'giving' tendencies of different types and weaves of Rope- a Tensioner designed for braided Metal Cable, even if it could be employed successfully to hold in place various types of ropes (...due to differences in diameters between metal cable and turned or woven rope), would only avail you of a Similarity in matching Tensions equally between a base rope and another that you were attempting to  match. 
You would not get an accurate pound/foot Measure of tension- only a comparative if you were trying to make a second or several lines taught enough to Match the Base Line you set up as a guide.

if you Did know- or could find out- how much the tension Was on that Base Line you wanted matching tensions For, it's conceivable that you could then use the device to Copy an amount of Deflection you would see if measuring with this cable tensioner- so the 'pull' reasonably matched. 
Only the demonstrated physical Angle of the cable tool would be your only indicator of a reasonably or accurate 'match'. You Still would not Know, for certain, the Actual Foot-Pound or Newton-Meter tensions involved in either Rope, only the Visual Comparative flex of two or more paired rope lines- assuming the Rope lines were of the same Diameter, Material, and Age.

I bought one. Look at the Model Number(s). The models PT-1, PT-2 and PT-3 cover the following ranges of cable sizes- #1- 3/32, 1/8, 5/32.    #2- 3/16, 7/32, 1/4.    #3- 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 33/8. [ INCH-based]
The Models PT-1M, PT-2M, and PT-3M cover the METRIC Ranges of Cables.    #1M- 2.5mm, 3mm,4mm.
#2M- 5mm, 6mm, 7mm.   #3M- 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm.
 When ORDERING, if you want the Metric tension Guage- make sure you order the the Model PT in either 1M, 2M, or 3M. Otherwise you will be sent the FRACTIONAL, Inch-based Model- PT-1, PT-2, or PT-3...depending on Your measurement of the boat's cable Stay's diameter. Time to break out the 'ol Wireguage.
