As a physicist you may be familiar with combustion- these incense sticks use that process. Ignite the combustible (thicker) end with a heat source. Most non-physicists use a match or lighter, but a Bunsen burner also works well. No further measurements, procedures, or precautions need to be taken. A non-physicist can help. Hand to a teenager with a lighter and say “light this”. Observe and replicate the process to activate another incense stick.
