Precisely what I was looking for
This little lantern turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. While there are physically bigger, more expensive, photoelectric lanterns on the market these little units are amazing. In reading the reviews before I ordered several people commented about the short battery life. When these units arrived I looked at the batteries and saw that they were 600 MHA. I replaced those with some 1600 MHA (Walmart was my cheapest source) rechargeable batteries which gives me 2.6 times the battery life of the originals. I bought these units to use on our camping trips where we typically take the pickup camper and horse trailer. Just one bright lantern doesn't do what we want. That is where these little units really shine, pun unintended. I have bought 4 of these. They are so small and lightweight and easily store inside the camper taking up very little space. Their output is more than enough for what we want at the campsite. I bungee cord one to the luggage ladder on the back of the camper and hang the other 3 around camp and we get an even light with far fewer shadows and dark spots than you get when you only have one bright light source. The best part, they are rechargeable by the sunlight! No smelly fuel, no need for replacement batteries and you can use them inside the camper without generating heat and fumes. Do not let the small size mislead you.

just the cutest little thing
I don't know why (and I don't have young children to blame) but I just find this wee lantern to be charming. I am a grown up but it makes me feel like a pioneer woman to grab this lantern, which I keep by my bedside, to "go to the outhouse" at night. It's very light, stable and cute (did I say that already?). It does not produce as much light as most LED flashlights, but it's plenty to move around the dark house with. Its glowing handle does make it easier to find in the dark, too. I'm quite pleased. Note, I did find the solar panel got quite hot to the touch when I left it in the bright sun (80 degree afternoon) -- not hot enough to burn your younguns, but you might want to warn them.

Disappointed
The latern was so cute and perfect size for granddaughter . Was very surprised that the light wasn't brighter. Honestly didn't keep it long enough to know about battery life.

More a toy than a tool
Cute, fun. Good as a novelty for kids. IMO if the price is in double digits it's overpriced. The AA NiMh batteries are great to see but the wiring may be dicey because the light is often unsteady and it doesn't correspond to the settings on the dial (like it starts dim, gets brighter then goes dim again). Trying to get the brightest light feels like trying to tune in a weak radio station. The light isn't bright enough to read by but you could find your way in the dark with it.

Good beginning solar lantern
I liked the solar aspect but it isn't very bright and it doesn't hold power real long. It is nice for our granddaughter to use

nice lantern
I ordered this for my mother, who is 83 years old and is in the dark because of Super Storm Sandy. She lives on the south shore of Long Island, NY and is without heat or electric for 10 days now. She never received the lantern. It came to me in Arkansas instead. I am sure it is my fault. Makes me sad. I am going to order another for her as it looks like she will not be getting light any time soon.It is a nice lantern. Feels cheap, all plastic, but seems to give enough light to brighten up things a bit. I do not think you can read using it.

Doesn't hold a charge very long.
This light does not hold a charge very long and the light does not last more than 2 or 3 hours on a charge. Also the solar panel on the top is fixed in place so it cannot be tilted towards the sun. Its very difficult to tip the entire light towards the sun to charge the light. Its better than nothing but not worth the $20USD.

however) and is easy for her to use
This lantern was purchased as a gift for a young niece. For her purposes (playing outside, walking in the dark, etc) it works perfectly. It holds up to an occasional bump (not a big crash, however) and is easy for her to use.
