Does this play loudly in an open outdoor space such as the beach?

Yes it does, we had it in the house and you would think it is really a big speaker, you have to talk loud. When it is outside its just as loud, maybe just a different sound, but when you combine (2) together you can have a real beach party, we have done that to.
